  • Comments Thread For: Spence's Trainer: Why is Thurman Getting Pass Brook Didn't Get?

NEW YORK Derrick James just can't figure out why some fans and reporters aren't demanding more from Keith Thurman. Errol Spence Jr.'s trainer considers Thurman's situation similar to Kell Brook's predicament prior to his ill-fated fight against Spence. Brook, like Thurman, was coming off serious surgery when the public demanded a Spence-Brook bout.

Brook was comtemplating on moving up after going up to 160, and coming off from a surgery and a TKO loss, but he was gonna get stripped by the IBF and be awarded to Spence.

Its just to come to be expected with PBC fighters, he should be asking upstairs why the fights allowed to be delayed. They only seem to be interested in pressurising a fight if its between a PBC fighter and a fighter from another promoter.

similar situations but quite different, thurman feels he has no need to rush into a fight with spence as he isn't even a mandatory..he's taking his time to peak into the fight..with the pressure from fans, spence and his team..those two will lock horns soon..perhaps next year

Spence was Brook mandatory, Brook hasn’t fought anyone at 147 apart from Porter 2 years prior. Thurman is understand his hesitation, James Degale had surgery on his hands or shoulder and came back and lost his title to Traux. You got to ease yourself back in to it after surgery.

You do have to let Thurman work his way back into it after the surgery.

But the fight wirh Spence should happen at the end of the year at the latest.

              Very different situations.

Brook was actually fit to fight, and spearheaded a campaign to fight Amir Khan at 147 whilst trying to ignore his mandatory in that very same weight. So when Khan didn’t happen, everybody was rightly saying “well what about Errol?”. Brook had gone far too long trying minimise risk at 147. All he had was Porter on his resume of 35 plus fights.

Thurman on the other hand has been inactive for almost a year and won’t be getting in the ring until late summer. It’ll be almost a year and a half since by then. So for someone who’s suffered an injury and undergone surgery, he deserves the leniency

From a politics side, there are clear differences. However, the fact that fans and media use politics to not push for a fight that we all want to see is a bit weird. I can see arguments both ways. We want Thurman to be completely healthy when he fights Spence, so people cannot use excuses. You see people use the eye issue and weight as reasons why Spence beat Brook (even though Spence broke his other eye and Brook said he had no problem making weight). On the other hand, Thurman has fought 1 time per year these past few years. I think a part of it has to do with him ballooning up in between fights. He needs time to take it back down systematically, so he isn't drained on fight night. With that said, it will be a year since his surgery. Time is ticking. I am glad Spence isn't waiting on him.

I say the fight should happen late this year. Give him one fight but that's it.

All that mandatory talk is nonsense. The WBC doesn't strip champions of titles. Especially not for a unification fight where they can get a huge sanctioning fee. Stop with that excuse. It doesn't have any weight.

When was the the last time a WBC champ was stripped of a title for not fighting a mandatory?
