The Boxing Writers Association of America is proud to announce that its Sugar Ray Robinson 2017 Fighter of the Year is Vasily "Hi-Tech" Lomachenko, who made history in becoming the first Ukrainian to earn that distinction in the 80-year history of the award. Lomachenko (10-1, 8 knockouts) earned the BWAA's coveted prize by beating solid contenders Jason Sosa and Miguel Marriaga in 2017, then closing the year by making two-time Olympic gold medalist Guillermo Rigondeaux quit after six rounds.

The best choice in a weak year, well either him or Rung Visai. Hopefully 2018 will have more competition and a higher bar to clear for everyone, including Lomachenko, if they want to win the award. But when no oen else is doing much at the top level, then you don't have to do a ton to outpace them either. The way Loma made solid guys like Sosa and Marriaga quit, and then made a top P4P opponent quit, sealed it for him.

Well deserved, could have also given it to Crawford for unifying the division but Lomachenko definitely deserved it too with his brilliant dominant performances

Loma had a fantastic year, but my pick would have been Crawford, for becoming the first 4 belt unified champ in over a decade.

HAND SALUTE! Lomachenko put on a show in 2017. I can see that Loma is gifted, well-disciplined, but I think he (or his team) has blurred vision! Arum and Roach are bringing you Manny Pacquiao on a platter! He might be old, but he 's still a bigger draw than Mikey Garcia! ESPN PPVs on deck! You have to do it! Don't play yourself!

Can't really complain about the award this year. Nobody really ran away with it imo. Loma looked good but fighting guys coming off loses and up in weight can't be ignored. Crawford unified, but the opposition wasn't great. I'd would've been fine either way.

                    Who can argue with that.

Lomachenko is the most talented fighter of his generation.
