  • the underrated 90s heavyweight era

just rewatched the 30 for 30 chasing Tyson doco and it reminded me what a great underrated era the 90s was for the heavyweight division a mix of real contenders and champs and interesting fringe contenders you had Tyson , holyfield , moorer, foreman , lewis , Morrison , mercer , Ruddock , bowe , douglas , tua ,Bruno , biggs , seldom , botha , ibeabuchi , Rahman , Norris ,tucker , stewart , holmes , McCall , golota ,briggs ,dokes , witherspoon , hide, akinwande , Gonzales , plus others I probably forgot it was a hell of an interesting time to be a boxing fan , compare that to today its only 3 to 4 interesting heavyweights around.

Underrated??? Literally everyone from that era even journeymen or guys who had 2-year careers then prison is worshiped & automatically granted victory over any current HW. At least on boxingscene.

Yup all top guys or champs would be only contenders , I mean AJ went life and death with an old WK . Just imagine if he was 5 years younger . I know his not from the 90s but he was the last of the bunch who was trained by E Stewart !!

ive found most newbie boxing fans here cant see past the last 10 years , anyone from a past era seems to get zero respect ? like the 70s the greatest heavyweight era theres a lot on here rubbish guys like frazier as to small and couldn't compete today its rubbish theres also a lack of respect for Tyson and holyfield when there both atgs for sure.

I wouldn't say it was underrated.

The '70s and '90s are generally regarded as the two best heavyweight eras ever.

Tyson was just freaking nuts in the 90's. You guys still remember how f**ked up this guy was? Full of dramas in and out of the ring. The Holyfield rematch got a lot of people shaking their heads. That's what I remember the most about The 90's heavyweight. Tyson and his craziness.

Thats what they were saying in the 90's compared to the 80's .

Some of the guys you listed would be labled as such by the same standard applied today ..

Morrison has a glass jaw .

                  Foreman is an old man

Holyfield a bum he keeps losing

                  Lewis is boring

                  Briggs is a hype job

                  Tyson should retire

                  etc ....

The only fighter the majority on this forum would like going by how they act now is Bowe and they would still call him average bc he went the distance a few times . Of course they think the 90's was great .....they can review it without beer goggles . lol

Every generation thinks the prior one is better . Its the illogical boxing thinking . This era hasnt even begun yet yet we already had Klitchko vs Joshua .......its just getting started .

If it was 1993 i guarantee ppl would be complaining just like today as a matter of fact Lewis the dominant champion wasnt even considered a good fighter by most until he retired and even then it took time . The two best never even fought each other Bowe and Lewis . lol

We have 5 undefeated top 10 guys and 3 are champions .....this era has more than 4 interesting guys i can assure you that . lol

                  Joshua , Fury , Parker , Ortiz , Wilder , Miller , Pulev , Povetkin , Whyte , Breazeale , Izu , Browne , H . Fury , Joyce , Haye , Briggs , Kownacki , Dubois, Takam, Chisora , Martin, Ruiz , Sirenko, Hrgovic , Jennings, Mansour , Morrison , Arias , Rock , Gormon, Junior Fa ,Mazurak ....Possibly Usyk?

Are you telling me these guys arent going to produce crazy stuff ( they already did ) and fights ? Come'on now .

Most of the posters on here werent even around in the 90's watching boxing from 1990 onwards, i was and alls i heard was how dull and boring it was unless Tyson was fighting .

Boxing fans are NEVER happy ! lol

So im going to have to disagree with you , its actually the current era that usually gets no respect until its over at least at HW .

i remember the 90s well it was great fun foreman comeback added a lot of interest ,title fights were interesting as hell the only bummer was foreman vs Tyson never happened that fight was building up nicely , the biggest issue with today crop is that they just don't fight each other boxing has become all about protecting your fighter with low risk paydays its more business than challenging themselves.
