They are held in high regard because they were part of a good domestic scene happening on ITV in the late 80's early 90's and for all the crudeness Benn had he was a dangerous fighter for any level of opponent like he said himself after sadly beating McClellan into a coma when the Americans underestimated him

"they brought him here to bash me up mate"
    Brit revisionist history....

McClellan was cheated that night. And It cost him dearly.

The way they were talking like you are now it seems like disputed long counts or not they were going to steamroll Benn but y'all must have forgot he was the dark destroyer lol

Benn got knocked out in a round.
But because of the corrupt ref a man was injured that night.
The ref is supposed to protect the fighters...

Benn headbutted mccellen till it nearly killed him.
And brits hold that up as some heroic "victory"

        • You're allowed more than 10 to get back in. Benn's dreadlock touching McClellan's cheek isn't doing the kind of damage that Benn's right and left hooks, right uppercuts and choppy overarm rights are going to do - Nigel Benn we're talking here!

          • I think Collins would've beaten Calzaghe in that '97

            • Collins also outboxed the sharp Chris Pyatt

He looked like he beat Reggie Johnson, who was as slick as a greaseball back then, and Reggie looked to of beaten Toney! Kalambay beat him on a split decision in Kalambay's backyard, I thought Collins outworked him with faster hands.

Eubank beat him clearly in their first fight, though, and backed off when he could've finished the man (maybe even seriously hurt the guy) - Collins had never been down before that, other than a body shot against Kevin Watts in the 80s.

Collins was the only guy to ever have Mike McCallum literally running away, and as a 16-fight novice at that.

He was a huge name in the UK after beating Eubank twice, and going into the Benn fights. His performance in the second fight with Eubank was outrageous in terms of work rate and unorthodox wildness, throwing Chris off and bullying him!

He walked through BENN's bombs! Made Benn quit twice. Nigel Benn for crying out loud - Benn was a boy in Collins' hands! THAT Collins was a world-beater, a marauding warrior. He would maraud his way in in an untidy way and grind his opponent out of there.

Earlier in his career, Steve was a boxer and counter-puncher, or box-fighter. He had a sneaky counter overarm right that was used very effectively against Reggie Johnson. He showed very good lateral movement against Thornton, and had 90 amateur fights including beating the European champ at 178lb, so it's not like he couldn't box.
I can't give him much credit for the wins over Benn.

Benn was finished as a top fighter at that point. He was coming off of a loss to Thulani Malinga.

The only reason they had a rematch is because Benn twisted his ankle in their first fight.

The only reason he had a rematch with Eubank is because their first fight was so close.

It looks good on paper that he beat them twice each, but in reality, they weren't 4 great wins.

Roy was making millions in most of his fights with HBO.

It's a myth that Roy ducked him.

He deserves credit for beating Eubank, but Eubank was faded and he was extremely lucky to have been undefeated at that point. By his own admission he lost 2 fights.
