There are 2 things that are clear. Andre Ward retired undefeated not because he wasn’t skillful. He had an amazing career and for reasons not part of this discussion was the “chosen one” in the boxing industry. The other thing is that he “bent the rules” and got away with it,( e.g. Kessler, Kovalev). If you didn’t see it in those fights you’re in denial. Still no one can deny he was great and managed to retire with an unscathed record. As for the OP question I think he would have handled Shabranskyy pretty easily but it would have been a borefest like most of his fights.

So he ate a decent shot, but that was a while before the stoppage. After taking that right, Kovalev threw back a jab and Ward clinched, and they fought some more before the final stoppage on multiple consecutive low blows. This is boxing, and does it mean that when fighter eats a good shot, that’s it, it’s the end? Kovalev ate stronger shots from Pascal and Boone. The stoppage came almost two minutes later and not it was nothing to do with Kovalev’s chin or headshots at all...
