You do realize that Bernard Hopkins was 49 years old when he fought Kovalev? You just countered Nate Campbell's argument by pointing out a triangle theory involving a 49 year old man! WEAK!Comment

"But you lost because Andre Ward was the better athlete. John can't train you how to be an athlete. John can train me because John can teach me everything he knows because I'm athletic enough to pull it off. Kovalev is not an athlete. He's stiff, just like every other European fighter; all he got is power."

This is a dumb statement by Nate Campbell. First of all, Ward isn't particularly athletic either, he's a methodical fighter who doesn't really excel at anything but just understands boxing well. He's not some sort of freak athlete like RJJ.
Secondly, you could easily argue that "power" is part of athleticism needed for boxing. Some people have more natural punching power, some people don't. Obviously, technique plays a part, but a it also comes down to athletic ability and how your muscles have developed and what kind of athletic genes you have. Kovalev also has underrated upper body movement defense which is why Ward wasn't able to get his jab going and in the rematch he hand to turn into a right handed fighter. This is partly due to athleticism (agility) as well.
He's just not particularly explosive and his cardio is bad, but the latter is probably due to a lack of discipline rather than a lack of athleticism.
Also, calling European fighters non-athletic in general is ignorant. How about Lomachenko and his speed and movement? Or Klitschko being a freak athlete for his size? Carl Froch and his cardio?Comment

I'd argue that Eastern European fighters usually have better athleticism required for boxing than the American fighters, it's just that American fighters have more technical diversity due to professional boxing having more tradition in their country.
Americans equate athleticism with explosiveness and agility too much because their favorite sport is NFL. These attributes aren't the best for boxing. Give me great natural cardio and power that Eastern Europeans have over that any day of the week. All these explosive and "athletic" (by the NFL criteria) boxers gas out and fade quickly. It's much better to be a cardio freak with punching power like many Eastern European fighters.Comment

Those are all great points, however, you've missed the most important part. Kovalev was talking trash about American trainers since he lost the first fight! He's already had a Cuban coach, and now an American Champion as trainers. Maybe it's just him? This is a dumb statement by Nate Campbell. Such a pity this relationship turned sour. Kovalev seems to be more at fault in my view. Very disrespectful to JDJ going back a few years now. Maybe there's more to the story but that's how it looks on the surface.
I would like to see Kovalev get back to his best because he is great to watch. Very TV friendly. Definitely some reason to believe his ego became a problem though.Comment
