He knows that people would tell him to fight Spence, and that would be a fight where he can't play football and bully like he does to smaller WWs. So sitting out and nursing that Mando status is the strategic move here. The downside that I see is that Porter isn't really a big enough name that people will care if he sits out or not. I haven't met a person yet whose enjoyed a majority of porter fights.
And he doesn't want Spence at the moment (15:22 mark):

What I didn't like about Porter's response in this interview is that he acts as if being the IBF Champion is "been there done that" and that going after the WBC belt is now a "bigger" challenge and that he won't budge from his WBC mandatory status.

No, Shawn! Bringing another belt to that table is bigger than being the mandatory. Problem is: Spence holds that IBF belt and Top Rank owns the WBO belt. You ain't about going through these hurdles at the time and I honestly can't blame you.

SMH, if there were nothing else to respect about Shawn it was his activity level. So now instead of fighting he is gonna wait til Thurman gives him a shot, knowing darn well he could of had and still could fight Errol Spence for a title. Darn shame

Porter did hurt his hand. We shall see how much it is injured and how long it is going to take.

Exactly. The Porters are the only ones who want this fight, but they are so persistent about it it's bound to happen. It's pointless though; it was a competitive fight but not Fight of the Year quality. There was a clear winner.

The only good thing about it is it pits my two least favorite fighters, stylistically speaking, against one another. So someone has to lose. I just can't stand watching Thurman circle the ring endlessly fighting as safely as possible, nor can I enjoy a Shawn Porter fight full of headbutting and tackling. Needless to say I'm ready for the Spence takeover of the division.

Exactly! Sure I wouldn't mind seeing a second act but it wasn't close like a Ward vs Kovalev I, Jacobs vs GGG or GGG vs Canelo.
Unlike Kovalev and Jacobs who lost a close decision, Porter lost a competitive fight.

Shawn Porter's issue with that, in my opinion, is that he clearly doesn't want to fight Errol Spence Jr, Danny Garcia is looking elsewhere, the only welterweight fight that Kell Brook wants is against Amir Khan, and he's already done a solid job of clearing out solid names in that next tier.

As the map stands now (with Rios, Collazo, Peterson, etc with their sights elsewhere), it's basically down to fighting Errol Spence Jr next, sitting on the shelf for a bit, or jump back in with a guy like Yordenis Ugas (a tough fight, no matter how you cut it).

Because Danny Garcia and to be heading for his own return fight against Brandon Rios and Garcia is a big enough draw at the weight that he can basically fight near anyone and do good business.

Spence, Garcia, and Thurman will all get their return fights, and I earnestly see Thurman-Spence happening in the summer, with a fight like Garcia-Vargas (Puerto Rican vs Mexican American, both can talk, etc) holding Garcia over until his own shot.

Everyone keeps saying Porter should fight Spence when Porter is not in the top 15 in the IBF rankings. Also, Ocampo and Ponomarev fight this weekend for the IBF #1 ranking at 147. So Spence will have a dance partner after Peterson regardless.......He can stay busy with decent competition and wait Thurman all the way out. Once Thurman is ready so will ESJ be ready and waiting.

Well said. Spence has no business fighting Porter because Porter is not in the picture of IBF, neither is world title holder under another organisation.

True the problem is porter isn’t a big name, spence is a friend of his and he shut down the idea of that fight. Just don’t think it’s wise to sit out until Thurman says let’s dance.
