I think Whyte would, at this point, be Wilder's best opponent to date, or at the very least on par with the best opponent he's ever faced as a pro so I don't think it's an unreasonable match up to make. And the reality is Wilder is a pro boxer, a prizefighter so to speak and boxing is his job where earning money in fact transcends any title and any legacy. If Joshua doesn't want the fight yet then why not fight Whyte for the biggest purse that Wilder can possibly make at this moment in time? Ultimately it's to his own advantage - beat Whyte and earn a massive purse then make the AJ fight even bigger to boost and maximize his potential earnings for that fight too. When the career's all said and done, he wants to go out with as much money as possible. If I was Wilder, I'd attempt to use Whyte as a pawn to maximize the AJ money and the option to do that is already open and available to him at this particular moment in time.

In fact the WBC rules are such that they have the flexibility to allot Whyte the mandatory challenger at any time under their own discretion. This may come in to play at this stage especially given the circumstances with the Ortiz suspension, as follows :
Upon any such ruling by the WBC, the WBC may remove the boxer’s WBC status and order an alternate challenger or name the boxer’s opponent as mandatory challenger.Comment

Nobody is claiming Whyte won't ever be named mandatory challenger. We're simply pointing out that being ranked #1 doesn't automatically make you the mandatory.
Wilder just fought his mandatory this weekend. He's not going to have to fight another mandatory for a very long time. Nobody in the WBC rankings has won a final eliminator. A final eliminator may not be ordered any time soon. We'll have to see how it plays out.
With Whyte and Breazeale both winning eliminators, they'd likely be the two chosen for a final eliminator.Comment

anyone in the top 10??? hes fought zero top top fighters since gettin the title in 6 fights. yeah people pulling out and what not but ggg has still fought 10 top 10 fighters while guys were duckign him and he didnt have haymon backing him with the huge money. he had to pay his top 10 guys almost equal purses.

sometimes you gotta pay to get good opponents. wilder is sucking that haymon money up like a vacuum. he could fight whyte and get 4 million dollars so it makes perfect sense to take that fight. money and a solid fighter win win. what wilder is doing is saying well i tried to fight this good guy but he wouldnt so im just gonna fight bums. thats like ggg saying well i tried to fight pirog but he ducked me so im gonna fight 6 willie monroes in a row. he didnt do that.Comment

The WBC rules are such that they can opt out of any conventional procedure, including setting a final eliminator even if two individual boxers have won elimination bouts with the belief that winning those bouts would lead to a final elimination. Under the "Rights to Revoke Sanction" they state "If the bout was a WBC elimination contest, the effect of the WBC’s revocation shall be that neither boxer will gain any rights to a mandatory contest or final elimination bout, nor be eliminated from contention as a result."
You're right that being #1 contender doesn't instantly qualify you as a mandatory challenger, but I was factoring in the Hearn / Matchroom angle and it's likely they are going to push the WBC in that direction for Whyte, which would ultimately be to their own financial advantage. If he's designated as mandatory, Wilder will have 6 months to face him (in normal circumstances but again subject to WBC discretion beyond this point) so it's possible he might take voluntaries in between or he may go ahead and face Whyte with the intention of subsequently securing the AJ bout.Comment
