Comments Thread For: Kovalev-Shabranskyy: WBO To Rule This Week if Title is at Stake

According to World Boxing Organization President Francisco "Paco" Valcarcel, his organization will make a ruling this week on whether or not to sanction Sergey "Krusher" Kovalev (30-2-1, 26 KOs) vs. Vyacheslav "Lion-Heart Chingonskyy" Shabranskyy (19-1, 16 KOs) for the vacant WBO light heavyweight world title. The fight takes place on November 25 at The Theater Madison Square Garden in New York City, and televised live on HBO Boxing After Dark beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Considering Kovalev got screwed out of three titles, including the WBO, it's the least boxing can do to at least give him one back. Plus, it's good for the sport to give the title to someone who we know will be willing to give every other top guy a shot at it. Giving Kovalev the title means that Beterbiev and all those other guys will also get their fair chance to win it. But if you give it to a Haymon fighter, or someone like Canelo or Oscar De La Hoya, they could hold the title hostage and hold up the division.

So, making this a title fight is good for boxing, so long as the winner fights a top challenger in their next fight. With Kovalev, that is never a problem, and that's one of the things that's always been great about Kovalev, a big reason why I became a fan in the first place.

I'm not sure why Arum would OK this. Gvozdyk is #1 with the WBO and he's with Top Rank.

Same, it seems like Arum's WBO ties are pretty strong, gotta feel he's gonna be pushing for his guy to get the vacant title fight.

Sadly, wherever Kovalev conversations go, Ward ones inevitably follow.
