Comments Thread For: De La Hoya Feels Garcia Made Mistake in Rejecting Cotto Deal

On Monday, three division world champion Mikey Garcia (37-0, 30 KOs) explained on social media that he rejected a potential multi-million dollar deal to fight Miguel Cotto on December 2 - because the agreement would have to include a multi-fight promotional deal with Golden Boy Promotions, who work with Cotto. As it stands right now, Cotto is close to finalizing a deal to fight welterweight contender Sadam Ali, as the headline fight of an HBO televised card from Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The only promotion boxers need is to beat the best. That's how they get promoted.

Garcia belongs at 135. Moving up to 154 and probably lose would be ******.

First, let’s get something straight, Mikey Garcia is talented but he never liked fighting and he has no aspirations of being in the HOF. Mickey came back for one thing and one only, mar-key pay days and that’s it.

Mikey’s problem is that one, he wasted 2 prime years and he’s now 29 with 3 maybe 4 years left. There simply isn’t enough time to fight his way through enough branded guys to demand mar-key money. Garcia doesn’t have a contract with either Showtime, ESPN or HBO and can't bring PPV numbers. Mikey’s best chance is to wait out a big name, beat him, and become the cash cow others want to fight. Fighting a name like, Pac, Floyd, Cotto, Canelo or someone with an established brand is Mickey’s quickest way to the top.

In the end, Mikey just blew a golden opportunity and there is no guaranty he gets another. If what Mikey is after is a mar-key fighter for mar-key money he’ll need to cut a deal with a mar-key promoter. That’s the world we live in, it’s not the player, it’s the game.

Mikey can fight whomever he can get into the ring but...he'll never make the kind of money he's looking for with out a promoter.

Mikey needs to stay at 135 and fight Lomachenko when he moves up. Then afterwards gradually move to 147 to get a fight with Thurman, Spence or Crawford maybe even Danny Garcia!!

Mikey can fight a few guys at 135 but needs to move up, making wieght is getting to be a problem.

Mikey at 147 is silly talk, he wouldn't stand a chance.

Both sides are some sucka ****. Cotto wants to smash a little 140 pounder ( or lightweight I don't know what Mickey Mouse is anymore) then you got Mikey acting like hes reached some Cash-Cow Canelo status in the game by beating Adrien Broner, in reality he should be defending his WBC 135 title vs. ironically Oscar/GB fighter Linares hehe! only in boxing.
