One of the maain reasons boxing is making a slow comeback is because of all these boxers like danny garcia and mikey garcia wanting to be free agents, not in spite of that. Danny Garcia knows that he has no contractual obligation to any promoter so as long as someone like showtime is dumb enough to put on porter granados or garcia rios them we will continue having these mismatches. When Mikey garcia said he wouldn't fight gamboa for a million dollars arum just shelved him and also kept walters on the shelf for not agreeing to fight lomachenko when he originally tried to make that fight. Promoters are the ones who try to make the good fights because its good business and the majority of these al haymon free agents would rather cherrypick because they know they wont get shelved as long as showtime is dumb enough to keep paying. This is why hbo cut ties with haymon many years ago

Broner put up his mitts and threw nothing for 12 rounds. Cant really generate much power on that, Garcia finishes his fights on counters and he stunned Broner once on a counter and hurt him to the body. Cotto is super open to pretty much every shot and is there to be hit, he wont cover up. Mikey is better than Canelo at pretty much everything so yeah I think he has a good shot on a defensively very open, extremely slow and horrifically counterable opponent. At its least damaging it looks like the Canelo-Chavez jr. fight with the role of Chavez jr. being played by Cotto. Canelo is good at slipping punches but not so much at moving and countering, something Garcia is astronomically better at. I dont know how many full-power flush straight hands from Garcia Cotto can take, but the number is a number that can be landed on over 12, IMO.

Second, neither Easter or Flanagan are house hold names and beating them won't raise Mikey's marketability one penny.

Mikey Garcia owed Top Rank one fight, and that ended up costing him two years; no sense in falling into the same trap again.

Mikey's not Saul Alvarez or anything, but he's known throughout the boxing world has shown that he can sell tickets on the East Coast, and will sell a lot of tickets when he finally headlines his return to SoCal. You add that Showtime is clearly interested in airing his fights and it's not like Mikey is scraping for opportunity.

Linares is basically in a position where he's either fighting Mikey Garcia on US TV, or fighting someone else off of US TV.
