Unlike amateur boxing, pro boxing about landing EFFECTIVE punches on the opponent without getting hit by EFFECTIVE punches by the opponent. The key word being = EFFECTIVE. Whilst in the amateurs, simply making contact with the scoring area of the glove on the appropriate scoring area of the opponent's body is considered a scoring blow. Whilst in the pro, punches that land EFFECTIVELY have precedence over ineffectively landed punches.
Effective punches are simply any punch that effects the opponent. So if a punch does the following things:
1) Knocks an opponent out
2) Drops the opponent to the canvas
3) Inflicts visible damage such as cuts, bruises, swellings and etc.
4) Snaps the opponent's head back
5) Forces the opponent to move backwards entirely
From the EFFECTIVE punching perspective, GGG actually does have tremendous defense. He might get hit a lot, but the amount of effective punches he gets hit by from his opponents is as little as the amount of effective punches the likes of Mayweather get hit by as well. The main difference between Golovkin and other boxers who are known to be defensively the best like Floyd Mayweather Jr and Canelo Alvarez is that, Golovkin doesn't mind getting hit by ineffective punches from his opponents whilst the likes of Mayweather prefer not to get touched at all whatsoever.
With Golovkin, sometimes his offense is his defense. If he is attacking, then the chances of his opponent't to attack him reduces significantly. Also, sometimes getting hit by opponent's punches (that are ineffective) opens up opportunities for him to land KO punches of his own. This is something the likes of Floyd Mayweather Jr rarely ever risk.
Sometimes, one might need to have slightly inferior defense in the expense of having superior offense. There's no question about the fact that Golovkin has the superior offense to Floyd Mayweather jr, even if he is defensively inferior.
