I have a great respect for him, he was a great champion. But why exactly? Because he beat Pacquiao?
Mike Tyson was the youngest heavyweight champion of all time (and he still is, if i'm not mistaken), in his prime till 1989 he was completely superior to anyone, after that all his life outside the ring destroyed him, not the oposition (i'm talking about Douglas here). One of the things that make me not consider de la Hoya an ATG it's because his biggest wins vs JCC and Whitaker were when these two were in top of their addictions. Just like it happened with Tyson vs Holyfield and even more vs Lewis.
And i want to explain one thing since i'm pretty new here, i REALLY admire Holyfield and Lewis i think they were trully outstanding boxers, probably in a better position than Tyson in history, but i really think that prime Tyson would have destroyed both at their primes. Tyson career was a rollercoaster and that downgrade him, but his peak was for me the most impresive thing i've seen in a ring.Last edited by Symmetry; 09-19-2017, 12:38 PM.Comment

people seem to sleep on shane's career. leads me to believe that they were not watching him in his prime, when he was the best LW in the world, a top ranked lb for lber, and the top ranked lb for lber when he moved up in weight and beat a prime de la hoya.
the guy was really, really good. people seem to forget that for whatever reason, be it his decline, their not watching boxing in the 90's and early 2000's when shane was in his prime and a dangerous puncher with great speed and a hell of a chin. maybe it's the steroids, but i think it mostly comes down to a short memory, or no memory at all.
as for cotto, he is not an all time great in my book. terrific fighter who had a great career, but ATG for me is the top 100 all time and cotto is not there or all that close. sahne may be on the outside of that bubble as well [anybody on this forum who claims he has hashed out the top 100 boxers all time with any degree of confidence is mistaken,] but i think his ability at LW, his being the best ranked p4p fighter in boxing for a decent amount of time, and his list of names over the years puts him in the class certainly with fringe all time greats like de la hoya and mike tyson. he was a smaller guy and beat de la hoya head up, after all.
and as for marquez, the guy has a knockout win over a fading but still viable pacquiao, a draw with manny [should be a loss,] a close fight with manny in '08 [was a close fight,] and a robbery loss to manny [ 3rd fight wasn't close, marquez won that fight, and a great career at FW and some success moving up all the way to WW. he's an all time great with a bullet.Comment

Whats the boxing dork definition of ATG anyway? How many guys can be ATGs? Is it like 200 guys & then we gotta bump someone? Or is it divisional & we can only have like 50 ATG's per division or something?Comment
