Why does boxing use such big gloves?

Why does boxing use such big gloves?

wouldn't fights be more exciting if there were more knockouts? You wouldn't need 12 rounds...

it seems like boxing is really more about who has better cardio and who can run the farthest?

hiding your head behind big gloves and ducking your head at the same time isn't really defending is it? it seems like a major flaw in the sport...

i just find it hard to appreciate i guess.... I want to like boxing... but it seems like i'm watching some 80's american gladiator tv show.....

          "Safety"

Started out bare knuckle, then gradually moved on to the pillows we see today.

It does help prevent more acute injuries, but there is some conflicting information about whether or not it is actually better for brain trauma.

I actually think it is an interesting topic because the size of gloves, at a certain point, drastically affects the way a fight plays out and the styles that develop around it. It could even have an impact on the success of certain fighters theoretically.

thank you for the informative post even though i sounded like i was trolling....

i really want to like boxing and I think it would be way more interesting with smaller gloves....

where do we see people in real life walking around with these giant gloves?

Giant Gloves... Giant Shorts... its just strange

I actually agree with you about the glove size. I'm laughing about the comment about the shorts. I like the old style trunks and gloves.

because most athletes/boxers dont want to Risk being potentially put into a Vegetative state for little pay, acclaim, respect from people like yourself who deem boxing not realistic enough send prichard colon amongst many other warriors emails asking why they dont use lighter gloves on more often then not superbly trained. superior technique power per punch ratio punches they throw compared to other striking sports at a higher level. I enjoy boxing for too many reasons I care to mention but watching an unconscious man potentially in danger after a vicious punch is not one of them

                  Because its a sport.
If you made the gloves smaller then fighters would have broken hands and wrists all the time, jaws, eye sockets and fights wouldn't last 2 minutes. Most would be over inside a minute. Who is going to pay PPV to watch that?

8-10oz is fine when you consider how its distributed and a lot of the glove weight is in the hem or wrist of the glove.
Have you ever been hit by a boxing glove or even felt a boxing glove? There isn't actually a great deal of padding in the face of the glove at all as it is.

Even these feather-fisted punchers, you still feel their shots, believe me.
