Comments Thread For: Gennady Golovkin, 35, Hopes to Continue Fighting Until He's 40

Gennady Golovkin didn't watch 40-year-old Floyd Mayweather Jr. beat Conor McGregor on Saturday night. The undefeated middleweight champion still can see himself fighting until he is Mayweather's age. Golovkin is 35, but if he beats Canelo Alvarez next month the Kazakh knockout artist probably would need to fight only another year or year-and-a-half if wants to break Bernard Hopkins' record of 20 straight middleweight title defenses before he retires.

Boxing is very much alive but what is left in the sport on the horizon though besides this fight? Thurman vs Spence vs Crawford. Joshua vs Wilder, Lomachenko vs Garcia/ Rigondeaux. Canelo vs GGG vs Charlo. I don't see much else, but hopefully a new Sugar Ray or Hearns or Tyson crops up, but likely can never be another, just different.

Is Ward coming to 164? If so, then yes!

I really hoped he would retire on equalling or beating Hopkins record, if he gets past Canelo.

As you slow down, the last fights are the ones that can do damage. Joe Calzaghe knew when to hang them up.. pls Golovkin.. don't fight too long.

GGGs economical style, number of fights and life style can easily allow him to fight on till 40. I'd like to see him whoop DeGale and whoever the winner of the smw tournament will be.

... The "Russian stock" isn't known as having significant longevity when it comes to boxing... Only the Klitschkos managed to last longer, maybe because they also were such big beasts...

... 2 weeks ago there was an interview where he alluded to maybe retiring after Canelo. What?
