i think the viewing figures will be pretty bad. this is a boxing forum, with supposed hardcore fans and tbh ive not seen a huge amount of hype for it even on here. but i dont really care, it doesnt affect me how many other people watch it and enjoy it, im buzzing for the fight and i think its gonna be a great watch

Well possibly, too many illegal streaming going on. If these promoters and broadcasters would wise up and lower the damn price, numbers would be up big time. Why are they still charging $65-$70 for HD ???/ SMDH. They should take a page from Eddie Hearns and keep it at or around $40 (Eddie keeps it 29.95 I think.) Or better yet, what about an app that u can pay say $15 per bout and u can watch it on ur android or apple device, no contract with a cable subscriber needed?

Depends on what you want to call a flop.

The casual sports audience plunked down their money in a major way (if you ordered it at home, you're looking at $100 plus food/drink), and the spectacle actually ended up being an actual good fight (stopped early, but not in any disastrous kind of way).

If you were a casual fan and ordered the event, your boxing fix was satisfied.

Alvarez-Golovkin is a good fight, and will obviously garner heavy interest in the boxing audience, but I doubt that casual fans will care, especially with only three weeks to build the hype (neither fighter being all that comfortable promoting in English), and that will be reflected in the buyrate.

If the fight does over 750k, I'd be shocked.

I think its actually going to help. Maymac was huge hype and didnt dissapoint. Casuals might buy more boxing PPV's now.

There's no adverts or visible promotion as far as I can tell. Oscar is a ****ty promoter. I'm not a UFC fan and I always know when the next UFC event is on. They get the word out through Xbox and PS game developers, while we're stuck with the old tired Budweiser crap for old farts, keep blaming Mayweather buts it's the dated way these old cronies run the show. Arum is close to ****ing senile while Dana is on the pulse of what's current. Oscar is an incompetent **** to be fair. He screwed Cotto.

The PPV could've been $20 and the pirates would've still been out in force, with the folks who already patronize the pirates still not paying for the event.

Even if there was an app where you could purchase fights on a per fight basis, you'd still have excessive streaming.

              Why lie to yourself?

PPV boxing, at this point in time, is an event/party driven enterprise, where folks way out the cost/benefit of hosting the event. You do what you can to get rid of the blatant thieving, but there's very little that you can actually do to stop the guy in his apartment, happy to watch the shaky stream on social media or sit with Brazilian/Ukrainian commentary the whole night.

The fight was available on PPV, through Showtime or the UFC if you wanted it digitally, through most streaming sources, for $40 at a theater near you, $40 at most bars/clubs/event sites, from $10-$30 at various food chains, and folks still went out of their way to try and steal the event.

              Let that sink in.

No, it won't flop. It attracts a totally different fan base. The fans who would purchase May/Mac are not the same fans that will purchase Canelo/GGG. A large majority were likely MMA fans. I think Canelo/GGG comes close to about 1.5M buys, a very respectable number.

We're still three weeks out and just barely done with Mayweather-McGregor.

On fight week everyone will be hyped. Also there's a good deal of casual interest in Canelo-GGG already, plenty of people at the fight party I attended were discussing it.

Anyway what would we consider a flop? I'd be surprised if this does less than a million buys just on Canelo's name alone.

Who knows, Karma might bite Oscar and HBO in the ass for all the shade they threw on May/Mac. A better question, is Oscar even going to show up to the fight? Last time Canelo had a big fight against a big star in Floyd, Oscar had to check himself into rehab. The way Oscar has been acting lately it wouldn't surprise me if he ends up in rehab right before Canelo/GGG.
