Comments Thread For: De La Hoya: Canelo Took Mayweather Fight Too Soon, Better for It

In hindsight, Oscar De La Hoya admits Canelo Alvarez took the Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight too soon. The money and exposure were unbeatable, though, and Alvarez's promoter is certain that losing to the extraordinarily skilled, experienced Mayweather made the Mexican superstar a much better boxer. Alvarez was just 23 years old when he challenged Mayweather, who was 36 and the best boxer, pound-for-pound, in the world when they fought in September 2013.

Oscar is so full of ****. He is betting on GGG to be past it. I hope to god that Golovkins fight against Jacobs was a bad night and not a sign of a decline but the sad thing is GGG decline has been coming ever since martin murray fight. slowly hes been showing since of a decline to the point Brook a 147 pounder gave him hell before the weight was too much.

I like canelo, he's a good boxer but. He got outclassed and embarrassed, Floyd was a surgeon that night.

I agree GGG looks like time is catching up with him bro, but I couldn't disagree more that Brooke gave him hell, Brooke landed a few nice punches but so do most of gggs opponents, im more inclined to thinking Brooke was always gonna do ok regardless of who he faced. You might be right, just food for thought.

Mayweather was 36. How much longer could they have waited? The PPV numbers showed it was the perfect time.

Oscar said he "had the blueprint at the time and Floyd was old and Canelo was the man with all of those fights, fast hands, etc". Then a 36 year old Floyd, who doesn't drink or "party", masterfully outboxed Canelo. I still remember Saul saying after the fight, "We couldn't believe how fast he was." That was Floyd at 36. Then 2 years ago, Berto said, (and this quote always makes me laugh), he couldn't believe how fast Floyd got off. That was him at 38. Conor has it in his head that Mayweather is old. You tell yourself something enough and you start to believe it. Problem is, Floyd moves, punches and reacts like a guy that's nearly 10 years younger. Back to the point, Jacobs is a GOOD fighter. Everyone acts like he's some nobody. Brook was an extremely skilled fighter that made weight rather easily. There are great fighters who fought a Klitschko and were punished and were worked over the fight after that like their time had past. Brook was skilled and got some shots in on GGG. Golovkin hurts people, though. And then a young Spence got ahold of Brook and put the screws to him. Then a great boxer in Jacobs boxed very well (I had him losing not by a lot to GGG). If Canelo doesn't move, he's going to taste that power. He hits hard, but Gennady has a great chin and he dishes it out even harder. That's going to be the competitive fight in the next few weeks.

I told everybody before the fight. If Canelo can't beat him, no-one can. I was right. I'm always right.

If you're not ready on your 44th fight, you are never ready. Canelo was 23, Tyson was 20 when he won a title.
