The Lara fight should have been a draw.
The Trout fight should have been a loss.
If g string had fought any 0f these fighters they would be his best or second opponent to date, yes, g strings resume is that poor.

It's poor because he fought the best in his division instead of old losers?
Or because he actually beat his competition instead of doing like Canelo and getting by on bribing the judges?

I could agree with you and we could both be wrong. Outside of Jacobs, g strings resume is hot garbage, absolutely nothing special about any of them before or after g string fought them. Like it or not Canelo has the better resume and it's not close.

It really isn't. The only good win Canelo has is Cotto, and that was actually close. And Cotto was pretty old.

                Who else then?
Trout whose only win is against Cotto? (Trout who BTW should have gotten the decision over Canelo)
Lara? Maybe he could do a draw with Wade, if he was lucky.
                Kirkland? 18 months layoff.
                Khan? Come on.
                Smith? Please
                Angulo? Meh.
                Lopez? A welterweight
                Mosley? 41 years old. 41.
                Cintron? Nope.

So what are we left with?

Common sense. It's not like you have to choose lesser of two evils (Trump vs Clinton). These are two tremendous fighters who know how to give the fans what they want.
