    Lemieux vs Cotto

Miguel Cotto-David Lemieux a possibility for December; if Cotto can come though against Yoshihiro Kamegai

    James Slater-August 10, 2017

It’s possible the fight has been overtaken somewhat in terms of hype and fan attention (an understatement if ever there was one!) but Miguel Cotto will face Yoshihiro Kamegai on August 26; the night Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor meet up in what is either a joke fight or a genuinely fascinating crossover fight (depending on your own view).

And as good an action fight as Cotto-Kamegai could be (Freddie Roach has gone on record saying he anticipates his fighter being involved in a “war”), we could be in store for a real bombs away encounter on December 2. According to a piece on ******.com, plans are afoot for Cotto, who is closing in on retirement after having had a a great career, to fight in December should all things go well with the Kamegai 154 pound title fight. One name being suggested for the date – to be held in New York with HBO to televise – is former middleweight titlist David Lemieux.

According to a source’s info, ******.com reports, how Cotto, 40-5(33) will fight again before the end of the year as long as he both wins on August 26 and picks up zero injuries in the upcoming fight.

Needless to say, a Cotto-Lemieux fight would be an attractive one, and maybe it will be four-division king Cotto’s farewell fight. Lemieux is almost always involved in exciting fights and he has the natural ability to turn an opponent’s lights out with a single punch at any time during a fight (see his chilling KO over Curtis Stevens back in March). At this stage in his long career, Cotto, aged 36, would be risking quite a bit by agreeing to get it on with Lemieux.

Cotto is more skilled than the Canadian and he has an excellent chin, but on the flip-side, he has slowed a little and he can be hit. Again, with Lemieux it only takes one. Still, when Cotto last fought, in November of 2015 against Canelo Alvarez, the Puerto Rican fought very well, appearing to push Alvarez close only to lose a wide decision. Cotto would likely be a pretty big favourite to beat Lemieux but the fight would be no formality.

Neither is the Cotto-Kamegai fight, and to look too far ahead is to do the tough and determined warrior from Japan a disservice. Can Cotto put two impressive and exciting wins together as he winds down his illustrious career?

A win would look very good on Lemieux' s résume
Cotto has somewhat slowed down but did revive his career somewhat
Good fight imo and great ratings

I highly, highly doubt Cotto fights Lemieux in December.

Lemieux can barely make 160 and the most Cotto weighed in for a middleweight fight was 155 against Martinez. Cotto weighed in at 153.5 against Geale and Canelo.

Cotto would request a catchweight and Lemieux kills himself already making 160, so I don't see this fight happening.

The fight that Cotto and Golden Boy should make is Cotto vs. Matthysse at 150 or something.

That is an ideal and good fight to make for Cotto's last fight, Cotto-Matthysse.

Both Cotto and Matthysse are with Golden Boy. They can fight at a catchweight of 151,150 or so, that would be good. Joel Diaz is training Matthysse so the battle of trainers would resume as well against Roach.

I am sure Cotto will never agree to fight the very hard punching Lemieux. Cotto is looking for an easy fight to add to his retirement fund. Cotto made harmless Geale come in at 157 pounds when he defended his WBC middleweight title against him. Lemieux can't go below 160. Lemieux should look for a different opponent than Cotto. Cotto wants to win his final fight. He will not be fighting the dangerous Lemieux.

Cotto would have a hard time against David at his age and time of career. I'd see it more of a career boost for David than for Cotto.

Honestly, I'm not sure what Cotto has left career wise, especially making it known he's done at the end of the year. A fair well fight? Does it have to be a brutal punishing one? What would be worth watching where it's not too easy, but also doesn't destroy Cotto on his last fight of his career?

I imagine David Lemieux would knock old Miguel Cotto out in devastating fashion.

Who has the Jap fought? He's not been in with anyone on the level of a Miguel Cotto and he has nothing to keep Cotto off of him. The Jap is getting stopped for sure. As for Lemieux, he's a bit overrated and Cotto will beat him but maybe he can last the distance being the bigger man. Then again if Rubio is knocking you out I reckon you're in big trouble against Cotto. Miguel stops them both!
