Ali is the "greatest" for what he did for the sport, what he sacrificed, his devotion and his persona. He's a legendary figure and has a legendary status that no fighter will ever match.

That does not mean he is the greatest fighter who ever lived, or that he would have beaten any HW in history. Neiter is true, IMHO.
