Comments Thread For: Roberto Duran on What Canelo Must Do To Beat Golovkin

One of the best pound for pound fighters of all-time, Roberto Duran, believes he has the game plan of what's necessary to defeat a dangerous fighter like WBA, IBO, IBF WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs). On September 16th, Golovkin will defend his belts against Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

He's right. Canelo just needs to be smart, use angles, move and use the jab, and open up and use combinations when the opening is there. Plus he needs to use flurries at the end of the rounds to try to steal them. As long as he does all that, he's going to win. Whether it's by hook or by crook, crook meaning Oscar De La Hoya paying the judges to fill out their scorecards before the fight

On another note, it's sad to see how bitter these old time fighters are about Mayweather and his success. It's probably because he's made so much more money than any of them ever did. But damn, they're so bitter about it it's crazy. I think Hearns is the only one who hasn't come out and said "Mayweather's overrated, We all would have beat him" and I respect him for that. It's just childish when you're like 60 years old. We get it, you wish you were in his position.

"Golovkin, you cannot square up with him. You must give him angles, as he will come right at you, trying to kill you! You must make him go crazy [with movement and by spinning him, not letting him get set] and then you must box him," Duran told..
Easy for you to say, Roberto. Canelo ain't got the footspeed or the agility to win that kind of fight. He will be repeatedly cornered by Golovkin. If he doesn't have the firepower to kill, he will be killed.

Yup, the Godfather of Boxing is right on the money.

You stand in front of GGG or fight him on the inside, he destroys you. Have to box a fighter like GGG.

yes indeed.. it's about canelo's mentality against ggg, if he not frustrated under ggg's pressure and keep determined & smart, maybe he'll be succeed.. to outbox ggg, canelo has to put extra power in his jabs & combos to earn ggg's respect, but it may cause canelo easily exhausted, he need to manage/solve that issue..

Canelo hasn't go the foot work to create angles so he uses upper body movements. Canelo can win if he stays in the middle of the ring and fight with combinations. He must avoid the ropes. He is a better fighter on the inside than GGG.

Funny how people are so critical of Mayweather but when it comes to talking about what a fighter should do "Box and move. Don't let hom get set in a fight."

Canelo just needs to be Canelo on fight night and he would win this fight.

                  Unfortunately, Duran is correct.

                  Why is it unfortunate?

No coach with a sound mind has a game plan to go to war with Golovkin.
For this reason i don't think Golovkin will ever be in a FOTY candidate.

He certainly has the attributes to be part of a ward/gatti kind of bout. In fact, sometimes i think it's what he wants.

Or maybe it's because he didn't fight the best at the best and was an awful ambassador for the sport as its best fighter.
