i am as big of a boxing fan as you can get, but boxing is done. we have no new stars other then mayweather and mayweather doesn't have the star quality or the style to keep american audiences captivated.

not only that, but even don king has invested in the ufc. unless we have a better generation of fighters in the next 10 years - boxing will be done.

According to the so call "experts" boxing has been done for years already. Boxing ain't going anywhere. And the UFC can't even surpass the WWE how's it going to surpass boxing?

That's a real good thread topic. I just finished reading a biography of Joe Louis recently and it's funny to see the number of fights he had in the late thirties in each year as opposed to someone fighting two, three, MAYBE four times a year. Even in 1941 when he was well into his championship he had a lot of fights, if I remember correctly it was around 12. Compare that to Chris Byrd with one defense in 2005. Obviously that's one case it varies fighter to fighter but still it shows the difference in fight rates then and now.
It's probably a complicated group of reasons. Maybe it's partly because of less venues to fight i.e. lack of club shows. Maybe it's partly because fighters are so protected by managers interested in the PPV numbers. Maybe some boxers are simply lazier. It's probably a combination of those factors and vary case by case, but yeah, it would be something to see some fighters manage to get 100 fights under their belt again.

the reason a lot of fans are turned away from the sport, is because it could take 5-6 months for them to get to see their favorite fighter fight again. If we could get more guys that fight like 4 or 5 times a year, and reach that 100 fights mark, then i could see boxing making a pretty easy and quick comeback.

Its funny how people think boxing is going down tubes or is already done, yet PPV prices keep going up and HBO and the fighters are constantly making more and more money. wierd...

i think boxing will be at this same level until well after we are all dead.

"Experts" can give my doberman a *******, thats how much their opinion counts.
About a declining popularity of sport, if a girl who come to my place recognised one of the guys on my desctop as PBF, not all is lost for the sport.
              As for the topic.
I think that fighters dont fight as often for two reasons. One economic and another is health.
In order to make a big fight it should be promoted on a constant bases so that is prolly the 2 fights a year reason.
Also, you may not agree with me, but I think fighters of today are much harsher on their bodies than back in a day. All this dehydration on a weight in, fighting couple divisions lower than your walk around weight is talking a huge toll on a fighters health, that is why fighters need to recover for a longer time.

boxing is too fragmented. there is no one league or governing body to take control. the reason other sports prosper is because they have a central authority that regulates everything. look at NASCAR and the NFL for example. those are two sports with a strong central authority that governs from the top down. they control all of the participants. players, drivers, agents, sponsors, all the rules, salaries, etc. as a result, those two sports are prospering with a huge fan base.

boxing will never have that. 17 weight divisions? four champions per division? The WBC from Mexico, the WBA from Venezuela, the WBO from Puerto Rico and the IBF from New Jersey? nobody is in control in boxing except three or four major promoters and two television networks.

also, look at how far the UFC has come in five years. they have an owner that calls the shots. the management group are the ones responsible for the television contracts, merchandising, promotion, marketing and the rules of the game.

boxing will never have any of that because everyone is trying to control it. as a result, hardly anybody controls anything.

Does anyone know how the UFC PPVs perform in terms of buy rates as opposed to the average of boxing PPVs?

The reason i say only american fights, is because Mexican fighters tend to have short amature careers and have like 60 fights before they turn 30, and they fight for ever as well.

WHy dont we see these true worriors any more. These guys that are well conditioned animales. I remember every fighter out there was a muscular, well conditioned animal. the Heavyweight division wasnt all fatasses. Now all the fighters that arent great or soon to be great are slow and tire faster then quickly.

Thats the reason i think there arent anymore of these shockingly great athletes anymore.

look at floyd, the so called best p4p fighter in boxing hardly wants to fight, he only fights once every blue moon
