Pacquiao-Horn a massive ratings hit, even with the often-elusive younger crowd

Dude. It didn't even have a freaking platform literally 2 weeks before the fight. With a 38 year old Pacquiao fighting a complete no name. And it was the highest rated boxing fight on cable of the decade. And in 11 years. It was a success.Comment

That's not even an exaggeration.
It was literally brushed aside by every single member in this site.
And now the same negative people are crying when they see the numbers.Last edited by rickJen; 07-07-2017, 11:07 AM.Comment

For real, man. People really need to let that fact sink in -- the fact that it didn't even have a platform for it 2 weeks before the damn fight
That's crazy. I remember starting a thread like 3 weeks prior to the fight asking if anyone had heard anything in regards to a platform, and of course I just got laughed off the damn board, every reply was "nobody on earth cares". Then it was announced that it was on ESPN and still everyone was laughing thinking it was going to basically by Manny Pacquiao on Friday Night Fights, lol.
And now it's the highest rated cable fight since 2006'. And yes I understand that ESPN is in waaaayyyyy more homes than HBO or Showtime, but that's why this is such a success. Because it's proof that you can have a real marquee fighter on a network like ESPN, promote it and surpass anything that the premium cable channels could do. It's a big deal. Now the big test is seeing how Lomachenko & Crawford will fare. And I really think those guys can do great, especially considering that ESPN will have ample time to promote their fights as opposed to the bare minimum that ESPN had with Pacquiao/Horn.
This, combined with the success PBC has had, is really, really good news for the sport of boxing.Comment

Where did I get the info that it peaked while Pacquiao was fighting? Come on, dude, you think it peaked during the undercard? I'll do a little digging for you in a bit and get a quote for you.
Your last paragraph is confusing. Standards for boxing viewership get lower and lower? Please point me to the last American heavyweight fighter that 2.5m people watched on TV. Or the last time we saw two fights that did over 4m?
TV viewership is increasing and that's because of the move off PPV and premium networks. I see some people like, "yeah but it's supposed to do those numbers off those channels." Well duh, that's the point. The bottom line is viewership is increasing.
And 4.4m is great but it would have been higher if it was on CBS or Fox on primetime. With a decent opponent. Fighting an unknown Australian in the middle of the night on ESPN probably knocked off at least a few hundred thousand. If that was Pacquiao-Thurman/Spence on CBS at 10pm, it would've cleared 7m IMO.Comment

Sad thing is, at least 10 casual fans I know that saw the fight all told me they thought PAC was robbed and that Horn used illegal tactics. The one question I keep getting is why didn't the ref warn Horn for repeatedly head butting PAC or allow him to get a at with elbowing him and tripping him up?
Oh......they all said boxing is a joke and that UFC is way better.
That's what this fight did for casual fight fans. That's real life, straight from the mouths of the public.Comment

That was my experience too. While watching the fight with two casual fans, they kept yelling at the TV for the ref to do something about Horn's cheating. When the scores were announced the both laughed and said WTF, "no wonder boxing isn't schit anymore, people don't want to watch fixed fights"
EXACT WORDS TOO. Even casuals know a fix when they see itComment

I keep hearing about these anecdotal "casuals" that supposedly all love UFC waaaay more than boxing. But they aren't supporting the UFC through viewership or PPV buys this year. It's one thing to watch one Conor fight and then claim UFC is "way better" but when they literally don't watch a single other card the rest of the time, the talk rings hollow. PPV buys and FOX/FS1 ratings waaaay down this year for the UFC. The numbers simply don't reflect that the majority of people actually believe "boxing is a joke and UFC is radz"Sad thing is, at least 10 casual fans I know that saw the fight all told me they thought PAC was robbed and that Horn used illegal tactics. The one question I keep getting is why didn't the ref warn Horn for repeatedly head butting PAC or allow him to get a at with elbowing him and tripping him up?

The fact is the eyeballs for boxing are so far ahead of the UFC this year it's not even funny..Comment

Did not read the rest of your post.
Where did you get your info that it peaked during the main event?
Like I said, the peak number can literally mean anything. 2m people could flipped to the channel at the same time and saw what was going on for 5 seconds and flipped away.Comment
