wilder was the mandatory when he won the title, meaning a mandatory wasnt due until 2016.

when wilder tried to fight povetkin in early 2016, povetkin refused.

when another eliminator was ordered, povetkin cheated again.

After Povetkin failed his drug test and lost his mandatory shot against Wilder, a settlement was reached and Povetkin was to face Stiverne for the interim title, with the winner facing Wilder.

Povetkin failed ANOTHER drug test and that fight was canceled.

Stiverne's promoter argued that since he had agreed to fight Povetkin, he shouldn't have to wait even longer for a title shot. Wasn't his fault Povetkin cheated AGAIN.

Which is how Stiverne ended up as the mandatory.

The courts determined that Wilder was entitled to his entire purse (including winner bonus) for the canceled Povetkin fight, as if he won.

And Don King was threatening to sue the WBC if they didn't treat Stiverne as if he'd won and named him mandatory.

With Wilder having been champion for two years without ever making a mandatory defense due to Povetkin's multiple delays, Stiverne lucked out that he was named mandatory without winning an eliminator.

But the WBC didn't really have much of a choice.

But is it really the right decision to award stiverne the mandatory spot without winning a significant fight since his loss?

Is it ideal? No. Is it what you or I would have preferred? No. Is it what anybody other than Don King would have preferred? No.

But Don King was threatening to sue if Stiverne wasn't named the mandatory and based on how Wilder's lawsuit turned out against Povetkin, if I was the WBC, I would not have wanted to fight Don King in court.

Wilder was awarded his ENTIRE purse for the canceled Povetkin fight, including the winner's bonus.

After that court decision, the idea that a court would rule that Stiverne was entitled to the mandatory position as if he'd defeated Povetkin is not outrageous. We'll never know for sure how a court would have ruled, but with Wilder's mandatory long overdue, Don King's position had some merit and it would have been unwise for the WBC to order another eliminator and have to deal with fighting King in court.

Stiverne is the former champion. He dropped appropriately in the ratings after losing the title. He moved his way up as the fighters in front of him chose to fight for other titles. At this point, there's no way to get rid of Stiverne. That mandatory is going to have to happen.
