By Cliff Rold - Boxing promoters and networks invested in the sport best serve the fans when they know they have to. During the first decade of the 21st century, when HBO had the market cornered at various times on Oscar De La Hoya, Floyd Mayweather, and Manny Pacquiao, Showtime had to find a way to bring value to their consumers. During the decade, they gave fans an unofficial tournament at 140 lbs., a series of bouts between Diego Corrales, Acelino Freitas, Joel Casamayor, and Jose Luis Castillo, and three unbelievable fights between Rafael Marquez and Israel Vazquez...

It's simple for this sport to grow, it has to be on network television or espn/fox sports, premium cable just doesn't cut it anymore, u need advertisers to buy in, and they have to buy in to these fighters, and managers have to get creative, there's no way why Keith Thurman. Shouldn't have a shampoo commercial, or Crawford with a rebook or etc etc

Well if people and industry weren't shıtting on PBC (CBS Sports) since it's inception we'd have better metrics to be encouraged or optimistic about. In Turkey we get some major fights on our government channel for free.

With the uncountable billions the major networks possess they could underwrite any major title fight without problem....

most watched fight on cable since 06' with basically literally 2 weeks of promotion. And with a complete unknown like Jeff Horn involved in the main event.

gonna be interesting to see how the Crawford & Lomachenko fights do on ESPN

I might also add that FOX/FS1 is also in the game. They have the most cards of anyone. They are another huge possibility.

I think networks need to also have their commentators give background as to what has happened in boxing the last couple of years. Especially for the casuals who haven't kept up with the sport for a while.

Instead of having Stephen A. Smith crap all over Horn and his resume before the bout, find someone who knows about him. Give the regulars the run of the WW division, who the contenders are, who the 4 champs are, why are there 4 champs etc.

Too many times I find myself explaining to sports fans, but causal boxing fans that DLH hasn't fought in 9 years, that Pac cannot fight Hopkins, and all kinds of dopey stuff.

Pacquaio-Horn was a much more entertaining fight than many pay-per view fights. There are a number of pay-per view fights that never should have been ppv, whether Canelo-Chavez jr, or even two superstar fighters in Ward and Kovalev but not that popular box-office attractions though.

HBO used to do that a lot. They would give you a headshot picture of each of the top players in the division and give a brief run down on each of them. I don't know if they still do that, but it was exactly what you mention here.
