Eastern European fighters are phenomenal outboxers and look invincible. Probably the most dominant amateur system right now. But they are used to refs breaking up the clinches quicker, maintaining the fight at a distance and strictly enforced rules. Inside fighting isn't given much credit in the scoring system and body punching is not emphasized. That's why the conversion from amateur to pro is not smooth for everyone.

That's why the Salido fight was too soon for Loma. He had enough fights to gain the experience and learn the tactics that pro fighters use to mentally break you.

That's why you see a big difference between JDJs mentality and Kovalev's Russian trainers mentality.

If you watch GGGs training footage, Abel spends a lot of time teaching inside fighting tricks. He was even trying to teach Sullivan Barrera a few tactics
    Great breakdown once again.

Q: Did you agree with the stoppage?

JDJ: Well i don't really agree with it but if Sergey isn't fighting back what are you gonna do? And he wasn't really defending himself

He says something happened but he can't talk about it right now. Kovalev wasn't injured. He says Kovalev has to become a better inside fighter

Asked if he's to blame for the loss because of the distractions about him trying to go to team ward

You can't blame me. When you lose the first thing you gotta do is look in the mirror
Many in the boxing world agree with JDJ on this assessment although he does bear some fault here because he is the trainer and Kov's stamina was a problem.

Ward put his whole soul into that right hand! Damn! Props to Kov for staying on his feet.

When you've never been in that position I guess it's tough to know the right thing to do.
One of the best responses on the Kov/Ward subject since the fight.

According to Kovalev, JDJ is just the mitt guy and he trains himself. And Kovalev brought over a Russian biathlon coach for his strength and conditioning. So not sure how much blame JDJ gets.

JDJ seems pretty happy with the outcome lol. I'd be shocked if they work together again.

Safe to say we likely won't see these two working together anymore.

I get that but ultimately he was responsible for having his fighter prepared to win the fight. He knew Kov had problems dealing with a body attack. He needed to address it by constructing a plan to take that offense away from Ward.
