Number 1: Most boxing fans are "casual" boxing fans. They think it's a fight when actually a "boxing match".

The other 15% understand terms like sweet science, distance control, timing, inside fighters, outside fighters, touching jabs, double jabs, snapping jabs, power jabs, faints, hand speed, foot speed, accuracy, constant great position, head movement, controlling the pace, changing the pace, foot position, hooks, overhand right, lead right, straight right, southpaw, pressure fighters, defensive fighters, dipping, boxing IQ, setting up, traps, shoulder roll, head control, poor balance, punching with your legs, arm punches, varying hand speed, etc etc etc.

If he was White fighter who doesn't win by force or by blinding speed, a good Christian man married to his day one chick, and a pound for pound undefeated champion, he'd be beloved in the mainstream, but since he's Black, and he doesn't have the type of charisma that a Black fighter like Muhammad Ali or Sugar Ray Leonard had & he's not a brute knocking everybody out, like Tyson in his prime, then people don't know what to do with somebody like Andre Ward.

He just doesn't fit the stereotype of what a Black fighter is supposed to be.

He is unbelievably boring to watch, he never throws combinations, potshots out this pitty patty single jab, Constantly clinches and utilizes other illegal tactics (headbuts, elbows, low blows)

Not to mention he epitomizes the self important, never fight out of your home town, have every advantage in your corner, hometown reff, hometown judges, aspect of boxing that the mayweather legacy left us with.

He's never seemed to give that much of a f#ck about fans outside of Oakland therefore fans outside of Oakland don't give much of a f#ck about him. I think its largely about that.

If he fought a more fan friendly fun style then that wouldn't matter I suppose, but he has a more skilled approach to the game that has lil mainstream appeal.

His layoff didn't help him much either & I think he's still in recovery mode from that layoff to some degree as well.

All in all why would most fans wanna care about Ward? So idk that a lot of these so called haters really hate him so much as don't give a f#ck about him (or Kovalev for that matter). This might be one of the most important fights in recent boxing history for bigger fighters where few people have a dog in this fight reallllllllly.
