Khan yes, Berto no. I highly doubt that Berto would have tried to emulate Floyd against Guerrero if Hunter weren't pitching defense first. Floyd didn't even go defense heavy against Guerrero, that's telling. Berto should have boxed circles around Ghost.
No, I know Hunter wouldn't have said that, but at the same time, what kind of a fighter you are is what you are. A GOOD trainer will enhance those traits and hide the weaknesses of their fighter.
Fonfara is a come forward fighter. Period.
Stevenson's ONLY effective attack is a straight left, either off the counter or through the guard. Period.
As Manny Steward used to say about Hamed and Paulie says now, the most effective way to nullify a left hand is with lateral movement. If you go backwards you will get hit, and it will go through the guard every time. Which is exactly what we saw.
Thus, Hunter should not have been saying "just defend" - that's ineffective advice. AS mentioned before, evading the left should have been the core focus in training and it clearly wasn't. Fonfara wasn't taught how to evade the left and the night of the fight, just told "defend" which is what he tried to do and failed.
AN effective trainer would have prepared the fighter to nullify that left because it's blatantly obvious from tape that's all Stevenson has.
