Both Cotto and Mayweather were in their prime.
You're right. 2005 would have been much better, when both held belts at 140.

But Top Rank and Cotto didn't want NO SMOKE with Mayweather at that time. So he moved on to bigger and better.

    It is what it is.

Cotto was too green in 2005

2008 would have been the perfect time for that fight imo.

Alex Ariza as well, does he still train boxers? He was a staple of Elie Sechback videos but has gone missing for a few years
I saw ariza in someone's corner this month forgot who

Is Errol Spence 'too green' to fight Keith Thurman right now?

Was Devon Alexander 'too green' when he fought Timothy Bradley to unify at Jr WW?

Because they had the same number of pro fights (22) at the time as Miguel Cotto had when won his WBO Jr WW title.

Cotto would have approximately 24-25 pro bouts under his belt at the time of a Mayweather fight. You know who Mayweather's 25th pro fight was? Diego Corrales.

Cotto had a belt at the weight and would have been fighting a guy moving up. It was a HUGE fight at the time. And Cotto and Top Rank didn't want it.

          It is what it is.

I would of much preferred to of seen the fight around that sort of time rather than in 2012.
I think Mayweather wins against any version of Cotto though.

Nah, not the right time for that fight.

Ending of 2007 after Cotto beat Mosley and after Mayweather beat Hatton. Leading into 2008 that was the perfect set up for that fight. It would have been a big PPV fight in May of 2008 or sometime in 2008.

                The 'right time' is subjective.

If you're Cotto (even though no version of Cotto beats any version of Mayweather) you didn't want that smoke until you felt 'ready'.

                I get that.

But if you're Mayweather, moving up in weight, have a history of hand problems and are pursuing even bigger fish and paydays at even higher weights (ODLH, SSM, etc.), then 2005, when both of them held belts at the weight is the perfect time.

And Top Rank didn't want it at that time. Period.

Ariza was just with Felix Diaz. He also trains Dulorme.
