HBO previously stated that they would broadcast Cotto-Kamegai if Cotto committed to a big name opponent in his next fight.

Similar to what happened in 2015 with Cotto-Geale and then later that year Cotto-Canelo.

Many choose to recognize it as a world championship and equal to the big 3 (I don't).

As for Cotto going 3-3 in his last 6 fights...that's happened to a lot of great fighters at the end of their career. Ali was 3-3 in his last 6, SRL was 3-2-1 (though it really should have been 3-3). Each of these guys has at least one embarrassing loss in the last six too. They are all greats.
Not saying Cotto isn't an all time great. I'm saying that ranking him #1 at junior middleweight when he's 1-2 at the weight in the last five years, hasn't won in the division in four years, and is 3-3 in his last six fights, is ridiculous.

Ali was not ranked #1 after going 3-3 in his last six fights.

Because part of the deal is COTTO vs MARQUEZ on HBO PPV in December at a catch weight for the WBO jr. middleweight title.

Thanks for clarifying. Very good points.

As for the WBO...well, I'm still struggling to accept the IBF, and it's been around since Holmes was still champ...I believe.

We'll see who he fights next.

I don't think it's so much the opponent, for being out almost two years it's ok,but that it's for a world title against kamegai and especially after two years when the other ranked fighters should be getting that opportunity is what looks bad,,i think he's ranked number one,and I don't know how a fighter stays at number one after being so inactive, thats organizations work

Yeah, I mentionted this point in a response post.

              I don't mind the opponent.

But this is not a World Title fight. That's what I don't like.

Think a few fighters at 154 would be a little p***ed this is happening, Kamegai hasn't done a lot to earn the shot but it's Cotto so I guess that is justified.

Miguel Cotto is 1-2 in junior middleweight fights in the last five years.

What justification is there for ranking him #1? What justification is there for ranking his opponent #5? What justification is there for allowing #1 to face #5 for the vacant title when there are available fighters ranked higher than #5?

Obviously the only thing the WBO cares about is the money, but they don't even have plausible deniability on this one.

I agree I don't think this fight should be a Title fight.

As for the rankings, Cotto is #1

#2 is Liam Williams who is scheduled to rematch Liam Smith

#3 Dennis Hogan (Oh my, he has a laughable record)

#4 Stepan Horvath (Another laughable record)

                    #5 Yoshihiro Kamegai

I can defintely understand putting Kamegai in above the other guys in their title fight.

But it shouldn't be a title fight. It is what it is unfortunately.

No way in hell these two should be fighting for the vacant WBO belt. There are a lot more active fighters that are deserving.
