Comments Thread For: Razvan Cojanu Arrives in New Zealand For Joseph Parker Fight

Joseph Parker's new opponent Romanian Razvan Cojanu has arrived in New Zealand after taking up the bout at late notice. With mandatory challenger Hughie Fury having this week pulled out of the fight citing a back injury, Parker's management sought a swift replacement for the promotion in Auckland on May 6.

One of the biggest problems in boxing is regional belts. It's bad enough there is 4 world titles & then you add the numerous regional belts for each organization that gives boxers top 15 rankings if they hold one of their minor trinkets. This allows champions to give voluntary title defences to inferior opponents who are in the top 15. Rozvan Cojanu is a perfect example of this. This is a guy who got knocked out by Dennis Donovan in 2 rounds & lost to career blob trialhorse Alvaro Morales. He got a top 15 ranking for going to China & beating some Chinese guy with a 6-1 record for the WBO Dim Sum title. They should of cancelled the card or rescheduled. It's too bad the Fury fight didn't happen.

Lol at all the attention Cojanu is getting all of the sudden that we're reporting him being spotted at the airport. Cojanu's face looks pretty damn chubby in that pic, so I'm not getting my hopes up of him being in solid shape, not that it will matter. More importantly, Joe is right, the regional belts automatically putting guys in the top 15 is terrible, because you get undeserving guys picking up South American and Oceanic belts and stuff that haven't fought anybody. Pretty much all the terrible names you find in top 15 rankings can be traced back to owning some kind of regional belt.

Brazaele was ready to sign, would have been a good replacement

Not on 12 days notice. He wanted 8 weeks to train or something like that. I also heard he wanted the fight to happen in September. I don't know if either story is legit but just what I read...

If they had to almost hocked the country to fight Ruiz? Cojanu must be fighting for peanuts. This is a downgrade, less interest.
