Maybe they will build him up carefully and pad his record but something tells me this kid won't turn out to be a great pro boxer.

He seemed to have alright power in the Olympics but appeared pretty feather fisted in his debut.

He also had his chin up in the air when throwing combos. TBH his style kind of reminded me of Khan very amateurish..

Not that everybody is Floyd I get that but that's the bar I set for Amateurs coming to the pro's and the kid is no where near as polished as Floyd was in his debut. Floyd at 19 would have knocked Stevenson flat out imo.

Even when he gets his pro style developed he doesn't appear he will ever be good enough to beat lomachenko or anything..

Saying he could become a star is 1 thing but superstar I just don't see it happening for him. Not good enough

I disagree. I think the article is emphasizing black because when you think of Valdez, loma, Verdejo, conlan and some others there are guys from a number of ethnicities and nationalities that look like they could be future stars that will make huge money.

I don't really see the next great black American star that could move the needle so I Wasn't so upset about the title.

I'd disagree with that. I definitely believe it helps. Mayweather, young Ali & Jack Johnson might have been the best 3 bad guys in boxing due to their perceived unbeatability + elite level of success during their prime bad guy days. But you still got guys like Mayorga (as you mentioned), Broner & Camacho who were/are successful bad guys in their own right.

There's are levels to it doe I'd agree with you there. You could probably come up with a formula showing the better you are in the ring the more you capitalize off of the bad guy image.

Besides, I think arum will make Conlan the "bad guy" in the mode of mcgregor, when he and Stevenson finally meet.
                  I don't think so.

I actually thought this myself when I heard Arum signed "the guy who flipped off the judges at the Olympics", but after thinking about it more I honestly don't think Arum believes in the bad guy angle.

He's certainly never attempted it before that I can recall. I think a major point of Floyd leaving Arum was Arum being a non-believer in the whole "Money" Mayweather persona that eventually made Floyd into the superstar he became. And hell he probably rightfully believes it because its easier & less stressful + he's seen more successful conversion on his method of making the cardboard cutout Sugar Ray/Golden Boy De La Hoya type guy than having a guy doing things counterproductive more often than not to getting the masses behind you. Being a bad guy isn't for everyone, everyone can't sell it, but not being an a$$hole is fairly easy to accomplish.

I think that whole trend with the cardboard cutout good guy is dated & people are looking for more real & flawed "heros" these days. Good luck convincing an old timer who's seen more success than most of us could ever dream of doe so respect to Arum, but you can't teach an old dog new tricks in particular when they still do their old tricks so well.

I'm liking what I see a lot. But I feel that Tank Davis may have as much talent but he also has a head start as far as becoming a star.

Yea I wasn't as impressed as I expected to be with his pro debut. And my perception is Arum would wanna have a nice KO for the 1st fight for Stevenson so this guy lasting suggests to me Stevenson couldn't get the KO in a sorta kinda setup fight via matchmaking as we so often see or Arum thought he was better than he is thus matched him a lil tougher than Stevenson was ready for.

And I really believe fans really don't give many f#cks for little guys so making Shakur a superstar is an uphill battle all the way up with many obstacles in between. So if this fight is any indication of what his power will look like in the future he already gots two strikes against him being a lil guy who can't KO low hanging fruit opponents like a guy who hadn't won a fight in 2.5yrs & hadn't even fought in a year & a half.

Granted it still early yet & plenty of kinks can be worked out, but the early prognosis isn't positive.
