I agree completely. The first one has, by far the best story to it.
Before he got his chance he felt depressed because everything in his life was so run down. He lived in a dirty and small room in the worst part of Philadelphia, his best friend was an alcoholic, his trainer didn't believe in him, he worked as a cheap thug. He had no girlfriend, like no people who cared about him save his turtles (how pathetic is that?). He is aware of that and probably stopped caring about himself too. He's nostalgic and sorry when he thinks about his childhood. He must think something like: "I've gone all the way from promising and happy boy to pathetic loser." There are some good things left in him though. Even though he isn't really the brightest fellow around he has some morals, is an honest man and most of all capable of feeling love and I don't just mean Adrian by that. When he loses his locker at the training center his life has reached a new low. Then, out of nowhere he is asked to fight Creed. When he at last decides to fight, his goal isn't winning, he's not that arrogant, he wants to go the distance because no one else had accomplished that vs Creed. He does it to prove to himself that he is capable of something.
He got his chance by LUCK, not by trying, but he seized it to regain self esteem. As the movie ends, he has Adrian and himself back, they're not complete losers anymore. There is some hope.
It's not a ****** movie about the ****** american dream.
Although I liked the other Rocky movies as well just because Rocky is such a nice guy, they're not anywhere near the quality of part I. Rocky didn't win the Oscar for Best Film by chance.
(copied that from another forum, it's an interesting synopsis of the film)
