Why would HBO ever decide to invest more $$$ in boxing next year?

I bet that no event this year will average more than 900,000 viewers for the entire boxing broadcast.

What can HBO Sports do to convince the heads of HBO to spend more money on boxing in the future?

Other shows on HBO seem to do much better in terms of ratings.

Netflix is getting stronger every year exponentially. Budgeting for shows and new measures is a priority. Netflix boxing will be a new thing

license fees for boxing cards are cheap compared to the cost involved with some of the headline hbo programming.

just doing some quick research, HBO pays about 10 millionfor a 60 minute episode of grame of trhones.

And that money is well spent on original programming since they make hundreds of millions of $$$. Boxing provides no return by comparison.

Loud DiBella was literally screaming at Chris Mannix on his podcast last week about this. They are not putting more money into boxing next year... has nothing to do with a merger or any bullshit like that, they are just not seeing a return on the money.

What can Peter Nelson tell his bosses that would make them want to invest more? He can't show any numbers to support his claim that's for sure.

Execs are numbers driven not nostalgia driven...

They could probably cut the entire boxing program altogether and see virtually no differences in revenue or subscription rates. Maybe 100k subscribers would leave at most. Out of 32 million that literally nothing.

Definitely. Netflix, Hulu, etc streaming sites will surely get into the live sports business sooner or later. And then TV as we know it is dead. This is why HBO started that app where you don't need to have cable anymore to watch HBO last year or the year before iirc.

Nelson can touch his boss' thigh & ask him, while looking directly into his boss' eye, if there is ANYTHING he can do for a bigger budget in 2018.

                  Absolutely nothing.

HBO wants to be topshelf at everything, that's their mantra.... they're not interested in being second-rate at anything they do. They see the biggest draws in the sport going to PBC and getting bigger money, so they've thrown up their hands and said '**** it, not worth the headache.'

Even if PBC is dead in a year, the damage is done over at HBO.... boxing is on the backburner.

HBO is gradually exiting the boxing business. Once GGG retires they will be out for good.
