Comments Thread For: Khabib: Old Mayweather Drilling McGregor Could Damage MMA

UFC lightweight contender Khabib Nurmagomedov (24-0) of Russia, considering by some to be the biggest threat to lightweight champion Conor McGregor, is worried for the reputation of MMA if their biggest superstar is blown out by a 40-year-old retired boxer. McGregor is pushing to face five division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a boxing match. Mayweather (49-0, 26 KOs) retired from boxing in September of 2015.

Boxers have taken a risk and set foot in the Octagon. Now it's MMA's turn to do the reverse.

It's true. The public thinks McGreggor is an all time great in MMA (which is more marketing than truth) so seeing him clowned by a retired boxer essentially tells them that boxers are still better at boxing (who'd have thunk it?).

Meaningless fight to me but Floyd likes to spend so he should absolutely pursue it.

Thats silly. Khabib still feeling the effects of his hospitalization maybe idk.

Not unlike when Toney fought "ATG" MMA fighter Randy Couture Toney suffered no lasting damage to his image nor did boxing take a hit for that loss. All the damage to his rep has been self inflicted via donuts & a lack of motivation during his boxing career. Cyborg Santos is a killer in MMA, but got her ass whipped in a kickboxing match & no to few MMA fans give a f#ck.

Boxings rep is the only thing really on the line here. Floyd will get paid. Conor will get paid. The UFC is likely going to get paid. MMA isn't even being fought on this night so it has nothing on the line. But boxing the sport will take a public relations L if Floyd isn't perfect & stops Conor in the first quarter or half of the fight.

The only thing it damages is McGregor's reputation and potential buys for Khabib vs McGregor. It'll damage McGregor for sure, but the sport will be fine.

Conor already lost to Nate Diaz in his own sport & sold more PPV's after that L than any fight in combat sports in the last decade besides Floyd vs Manny & Floyd vs Canelo. Matter of fact I think Conor has 3 of the top 6 or 7 selling PPV's in combat sports in the last decade & 2 of them were after he lost.

A L to an "ATG" boxer in a boxing match does nothing to his rep. Sh^t man if Conor wins a round its a W. If Conor hears the bell for the 4th round its a W. The bar for Conor is low here. Saying Conor has much of anything on the line here is like saying if Tom Brady lost a pick up basketball game to LeBron his rep is ruined.

As usual lotsa boxing fans got nutty logic & don't even care to consider facts with anything MMA related for whatever weird bias they often have.

Khabib draining himself to outweigh and wrestle smaller guys is what's killing the UFC. Cutting weight for an advantage and putting himself at risk is a black eye on the sport and he already ruined UFC 209.

Conor getting outboxed for 12 rounds and looking as fresh as Pacquiao after his Mayweather fight isn't going to tarnish MMA at all. Nobody will care. And we'll all be excited for McGregor v. Diaz 3.
