I don't know how much money would be funded by the government for a Golovkin fight but countries like to have these events because it serves the purpose of getting it's name out and it's a chance for people to show national pride.
Events are often held in countries with disparities in income. I don't see the big deal with a fight happening there. I think they can sell out the 38k arena and get some money from sponsors/tv etcComment

Iole is definitely a solid reporter, but this is another instance of having Tom Loeffler being the sole party corroborating the PPV information, so I'll wait for some other confirmationper his Fatness....

If Golovkin doesn't fight Canelo in September then he is likely going to face a poor mandatory. The only exception would be if Jermall Charlo manages to become the WBC mandatory and is given the opportunity first. So although it'd be better to see a Jacobs rematch, the mandatory situation won't allow it. Only the Canelo fight would make the organisations look the other way.I'm personally fine with delaying the Canelo fight. I don't think Canelo has any chance vs Golovkin and Canelo's momentum is **** right now.
Canelo facing Golovkin is nothing like when Trinidad faced off with Hopkins. Tito had dramatic victories over killers like Reid, Vargas, and even Joppy was good back then.
Canelo? He's coming off laughable wins over Liam Smith, Amir Khan, and facing a weight drained Chavez Jr who's looked like crap for the last 3 years. His best win was Lara and it was a snooze fest. Yeah, Golovkin would have better fights rematching Jacobs, Charlo, Eubank, Rameriz, & DeGale.Comment

Governments always give BS reasons to sponsor these type of events that in reality have zero or more likely negative economic net benefits. It's been widely established in the economic literature than these things are a huge waste of money. Just because lots of other countries do it, it doesn't make it any more correct.I don't know how much money would be funded by the government for a Golovkin fight but countries like to have these events because it serves the purpose of getting it's name out and it's a chance for people to show national pride.

And the thing is that you're right. It would probably be a profitable event event without the government's assistance, which why it's maddening. There's zero reason for the government to be sponsoring boxing. It's fucking crazy countries keep on doing this. Australia for some reason puts up money for almost every Mundine fight. And if I remember correctly, the state-run Airline and Oil/Gas companies sponsored the Martinez-Murray fight for $3M. Recently Pacquiao was asking for $25M to fight in the Philippines. It's nuts.Last edited by DoktorSleepless; 03-24-2017, 08:00 PM.Comment

I don't have any idea how good Billy Joe Saunders is, but he was able to show that he can give you a real crafty 8 rounds in his fight with solid prospect Chris Eubank Jr, and he was able to show that he can get through a fight without being anywhere near on form, tbh.
Saunders is busy with a good jab, is slicker than folks give him credit for being, and seems pretty comfortable punching in between his opponent's punches. The one clear hole that I see in his game is that he seems to have the habit of fading late in fights (probably more of a fitness things, as he balloons up in between fights).
Hopefully we found out how good Saunders actually is; Golovkin is a B+ fighter, so we'll see how Saunders performsComment
