This why no superstar have been made next to pac and floyd

Because every breakthrough fight that gets made they just fail to step it up! When the whole world is watching the better guy would rather play it safe than grab greatness! Thurman won, but could he have done better? Esp in the championship rounds? Yes! Compare how pacquiao demolish barrera, or floyd to corrales to this sorry ass fights when they had their golden opportunities. Canelo-cotto, the supposed younger hungrier bigger guy decided to box the old one instead of making a statement. Rigo-donaire, lara-Canelo.

If you dont know what im talking about then you dont know prizefighting.

Why not fight as hard as you could. Hook all the casuals. Live up to the hype. Earn all that money. Earn that driver seat. I know all the great ones first did.

Backpedalling in the championship rounds to the smaller guy whom you claimed you're going to hurt is just off.

i used to be here regularly, and now seeing these young guns making demands and diva moves before doing impressive stuffs first and earning their spots is plain bs.

Its the social media era, and promotion is way easier than ever. But none of these guys can make 1m ppv buys which 1990 fighters can even do.

I'll be hated for this, and cong**** for making this fight happen, but just a thought.

Theres truth in this. Golovkin is the one guy who understands this and its why he's the face of boxing with respectable drawing power despite not having fought any star. Too bad his coming out party came so late, he was going down the may/pac route.

The main problem would still be that the superstars of the previous generation didn't pass the torch to the new one.

Floyd and Manny became huge stars after beating De La Hoya. They also fought guys like Cotto, Canelo, Marquez, Barrera, Morales and Hatton who had a considerable following of their own due to their national background. Those guys fought each other and benefited from Pacman's and Floyd's massive popularity. Canelo briefly touched that era and is now the biggest draw because of that, not because of his fighting style.

Then you have guys like Andre Ward who beat people that no one outside of hardcore boxing fanbase knows, at least in the USA. Even if he has a respectable resume no one gives a damn because no one knows who Kessler and Abraham are.

Same goes for Thurman and Garcia. Or GGG if you want. GGG and Wilder are a proof that even if you don't play it safe and go for the KOs all the time you won't become a star until you beat someone who is already a star. Or Kovalev and Crawford for the matter.

Thurman made the mistake the last 2-3 rounds. The fight was on freaking CBS. I don't know how many people tuned in..but definitely A LOT.

And it was still relatively close. He chose to leave it to the judges hands rather than take initiative and bring the action. I understand he was boxing. But you don't win over casual fans that way in a
'superfight' ...on a rare broadcast on primetime network TV.

fraud jr is not a superstar inside the ring. he's the most boring fighter of all time.

he became known not because of his killer instinct inside the ring but used his hood rat demeanor to sell tickets. the fact is 99.8% of fans who bought tickets and ppv are there not to watch an exciting fights but to see him lose.

SMH. This isn't the problem with boxing, this is the problem with boxing fans.

Last night wasn't a breakthrough fight, it should be -- and we can only hope -- a part of a series of fights that leads to a clear welterweight champion. And from that, it's likely a star will emerge.

We need to stop getting caught up with that "can this fight save boxing" mindset. Boxing is in a rebuild stage. And the best way to build it up is to continually make good fights. Last night, we took a huge step in the right direction. No, the action wasn't scintillating but two of our premier fighters took center stage on free TV. Not to mention Erickson Lubin probably making a few new fans. Imagine if Spence beats Brook...and he fights Thurman next on NBC? Sick, right? Don't get caught up in the moment or you'll miss what's ahead.

Doesn't help these guys when they only fight 2x a year.
