There are only 2 things in control:
a) the contract
b) market realities

The contract is the defining consideration. The terms of the contract can only be changed by mutual consent. So the only reason that Kovalev's team have to change those terms is if it is some kind of a win for them ie money.
This is where the market realities come into play. If the market supports so much $ that Ward can argue that he won't fight at all (is prepared to cut off his own nose to spite his face) unless he gets the fatter end of a deal that is bigger than was anticipated when the original contract was signed. I doubt that this is the case. The fight wasn't extremely financially successful.

The only control Ward has is to retire. The only control Kovalev has is to refuse to change the terms.
