Dmitry Pirog's Career-Ending Back Injury Came From Hitting Car Tyres With A Hammer

It's an exercise widely used in boxing but it's this very exercise which would bring about the end of Pirog's career after he ruptured his back during a routine workout using a hammer to strike car tyres - otherwise known as Sledgehammer Training.

    Source
Pirog was training in the mountains in his native Russia, preparing for the bout, when he suffered the injury this past weekend, Pelullo said.

"He trains with big tires and a sledgehammer, and he hits the tire with the sledgehammer, and he was doing that and he ruptured a disc in his back," Pelullo said. "He was up in the mountains where he always trains. Everything was going fine. He injured it while doing that workout. Then he flew back to Moscow and saw a specialist. He wanted to fight but there's no way. He will be out three to four months."

its a freak injury. pirog also maybe was using way too heavy of a sledgehammer or his form broke down and he got sloppy with it...or a combination of those both.

True but anything can happen. You could get hit by a car when you go out for your roadwork, you could slip and break your leg, countless freak things could happen. Tire/Sledge training is a great workout fighters have been doing it for decades.

Many things are non-disclosed. Could be something not even related to said injury, that's just the statement said from Pirog's camp. Various forms of PED use can be a downfall too. It could also be a degenerative disc that just won't ever get better and would just make the boxer quit boxing. Even repairing the disc with implants would affect normal routine so it's best to give up the hurt game.

Ironically both Pirog and Jacobs have suffered from spine related diseases. This is why Jacobs is on going to win. Any of you ever suffer from a bad illlnes or cancer - from whichever stage - and you love this sport and what it takes to competes then naturally you can only empathize for Jacobs determination.
