    Ali; One of a Kind

A lot of people have tried to emulate Ali over the years, with mixed results. Ali had tremendous advantages in hand and foot speed. He also had incredible timing. These attributes enabled him to hit with power while retreating, which also meant he was usually hitting an opponent who was advancing which further magnified his punching power. He was also very quick mentally and anticipated very well, allowing for him to adapt to different styles. Then, the big difference. Heart and toughness. It would be impossible to name a fighter who stood in there with the power punchers that Ali handled...Liston, Cleveland Williams, Shavers, Frazier, FOREMAN, Lyle...I can imagine it was really discouraging for these monsters to land punches that had ko'd many fighters and see them not have much effect on Ali. That's a complete fighter. Might never see his equal.

We are not comparing careers the thread is about styles! Ali didnt even have effective body punching,Floyd threw more fluid with all types of punches,Ali soley relied on fighting in spurts when his opponents gave an opening or slowed down. Floyd also didnt rely on just the jab to set everything up,Ali did, which gave Floyd more diversity in his style not relying on one punch to make his style work.
As a heavyweight, Ali style is hands down much better than Floyds. Floyd's style as a heavyweight would be more difficult.

      Ali all the way!!!

The question really needs a criterion to offer any insight. i.e. superior in regards to what?

And unless two boxers fight the same set of opponents, there's no way to claim that one style is more effective than the other.

That said, watching clips of pre-draft Ali, he was uniquely amazing, heavyweight or no.

Nope. And if they were the same height /length rest assured Ali would take more punishment.

lol...ask Cleveland Williams, if Ali didn't like being aggressive...

in the early rounds yeah, ali, srl, Floyd, roy,...all those guys took the early rounds to figure guys out...the difference with ali is, the second half of the fight, he was either looking for the ko, or to inflict punishment until either the corner throws in the towel, or the final bell rings...
Why cleveland chased him around the ring with being IMPAIRED and lost most of his mobility from a gun shot injury. Not exactly hard to punch out a guy in circles who cant move effeciently against a top fighter is it?

I can name and give examples of a handful of fights ,if you really think Ali wasn't safety first you never watched Ali full fights ,you are watching clips like most do,because the k.o was the last thing he looked for ,first was tiring out his opponents. Even the most die hard Ali fan knows that.

I grew up watching Muhammad Ali, on ABC, closed circuit television, and the whole nine so, nope, no newbie here.
Just because Muhammad Ali, operated in a backwards fashion, didn't necessarily make him a safety first fighter. The fact that he has a large amount of ko's should be proof enough of that.
