I think his greatest test was the post prime Oscar and he just about made it through but he was beat up after that. Didn't he have swellings over both his eyes? Whereas Oscar looked relatively untouched.

Its why Mayweather so fiercely avoided atg or even world level prime offensive fighters.

I dont like Floyd, but the guy is a defensive master
Because 99.9% of Floyd's defense wasn't based on his insane reaction times and head movement either, was it?

Who criticizes an athlete for "only" be able to avoid punishment due to his athleticism?

Does Usain Bolt's style rely on his speed? Yes! and when his speed and athleticism decreases? that is when he will retire, or start getting beaten more often!

Boxing is an athletic sport, and physical components such as speed and athleticism are going to greatly enhance your defensive abilities if? you apply those attributes with the correct technical skills! Fighters such as Roy Jones, Bernard Hopkins, Sugar Ray Leonard and Muhammad Ali where all fighters renowned for being able to invade their opponents offensive attacks! (And they achieved this by using their athletic attributes mixed with technical skills).....

Floyd Mayweather is no different! his style relies completely on his athleticism and speed! (On a fundamental level)...and this is the same in all sports which require athleticism! if this was not the case then Michael Jordan would still be playing in the NBA right now! (Sometimes i find that boxing fans have very distorted perceptions of life!)....

For the simply fact that Muhammad Ali could throw more fluent combinations, i believe his style was better than Floyd Mayweather's! if you really analyse Floyd Mayweathers style? he has only got four punches in his arsenal! The Jab, Straight Right Hand, Jab to the body and Left Hook! (This is one of the reason's why he does not stop many opponents, and once his athleticism goes? he would be beaten just like all the great fighters who fought way past their prime! During the 1970's when Muhammad Ali's movement and head-movement potent? he proved that he could fight!)...

When Ali was still Cassius Clay he was untouchable!
Uncomparable to what?He had difficulties blocking stiff jabs and left hooks because his guard was down. Mayweather is far more tight and a better counter puncher.both were defensive fighters just Mayweather was better at it.If Clay was untouchable he would not have ate Cooper left hooks or numerous Karl Mildenberger punches for 10 rounds, watch the 8th rnd in that fight and tell me how UNTOUCHABLE CLAY was against a slow puncher and smaller guy like that?

We are not comparing careers the thread is about styles! Ali didnt even have effective body punching,Floyd threw more fluid with all types of punches,Ali soley relied on fighting in spurts when his opponents gave an opening or slowed down. Floyd also didnt rely on just the jab to set everything up,Ali did, which gave Floyd more diversity in his style not relying on one punch to make his style work.

Really so what was all that keeping distance for and avoiding engaging until he felt comfortable? lol

He didnt like being aggressive or going forward and tried running around /moving around the ring to mentally get to his opponets..if thats not fighting cautious/safely,than i dont know what is.

                  Depends what you mean?

More exciting? Yes, Ali's was better in that regard. Ali was a more exciting fighter. He got KO's, he got hit too, he was exciting.

Getting hit less and taking the least punishment possible and landing as much of your punches as possible, that goes to Floyd.

Many styles look better than Floyd's in the ring. Gatti's, Broner's, Foreman's, Corrales', Tyson's to name some.

ali was poetry, with boxing gloves....

lol...ask Cleveland Williams, if Ali didn't like being aggressive...

in the early rounds yeah, ali, srl, Floyd, roy,...all those guys took the early rounds to figure guys out...the difference with ali is, the second half of the fight, he was either looking for the ko, or to inflict punishment until either the corner throws in the towel, or the final bell rings...
