He didn't carry his own career all that well let alone the whole of boxing. Mayweather and Pac and ODLH carried boxing since 2004 to 2015.

Ward needs the Russian to be his cash out fight. There is no one left for him to fight. he just is not a big enough guy who can go up to grab that many fights past this weight limit... And he can't go back down. So this last fight would have to make financial sense to his backers and for him. Its a slightly more nuanced situation than the haters would imagine. He should trounce the Russian once again though and make the haters here cry some more tears.

Everyone knows Ward's not retiring. He has unfulfilled ambitions, both in boxing terms and especially in financial terms.

If he beats Kovalev in the rematch, then there's a great chance that he can be the undisputed champ at light-heavyweight. I mean he's going to the hall already but that would confirm it beyond all doubt.

this guy needs to shut up and take the rematch.

iu understand that he's probably trying to leverage more money or a favorable split, but ffs dude you can't expect your boss to take a loss on every fight if you threaten to retire. if you don't plan to have a future in boxing there's no reason for a promotor to invest.


might be an element posturing, but it's still a bad look and i do think he'll retire at this stage over taking a step back and fighting on regular premium cable.

Why? Ward brings all the criticism on himself. He is a whiney primadona out of the ring.

After a close fight that most thought he lost, and having signed a rematch clause AND having gotten a 70/30 split IN HIS FAVOR on the first go round ....

then he whines about the terms of a rematch clause (which he signed off on or must have known about!!)

Cries because "Mama, they're calling me names"

And ... talks bs about retirement.

I wouldn't be surprised if the rematch clause says something like if either one fights someone else first then it is null and void. If that is true it would account for Ward screwing with Kov's head - but it is not justifiable.

It really screws Kovalev over if Ward retires and splits up all those belts and leaves Kovalev with no big fights that he can get to reestablish himself.

If Kovalev has to sweeten the pot by agreeing to have the fight in LA or Oakland, then it'd be in his best interest to do so.
