Evidently, Canelo and his team are waiting for GGG to get past his prime, and get really beaten by someone else other than Canelo, to make GGG lose both his confidence and winning mentality, and become more cautious and less dangerous.
That's exactly what Mayweather Jr. did vs. Pacquiao. He waited and waited. Then, Marquez almost killed Manny. Even so, Manny was back in the game (I don't remember any other ATG top name who got nearly killed and successfully came back to fight at nearly the same level as before being brutally KO'd). BTW many people, knowledgeable people, that is, experts and commentators who aren't American and aren't related to Mayweather Jr. in any way, as in not having any vested interest in his career, did see Manny as the winner.
So, obviously, Canelo is waiting for those two things: 1) For somebody else to inflict both physical and emotional (decreased confidence) damage to GGG. 2) For father time to do his job, so GGG becomes less strong, less accurate and less dangerous, thus an easy target for a younger, faster and possibly stronger opponent in Canelo.
If Canelo eventually fights and defeats an over the hill and damaged GGG, he will not get credit from the boxing pundits, very deservingly so. Just like both Mayweather Jr. (in a very controversial decision) and Manny Pacquiao (in a 100% clear and dominant KO win, which was actually a beat-up from beginning to end) did vs. a past-prime De La Hoya who had already been KO'd by someone else (Hopkins) and therefore, lost his edge. Or when Canelo himself fought a way past-prime Mosley and couldn't even knock him down like Manny Pacquiao did a couple of fights before, being much smaller than Canelo. Canelo may try and show off a win over Mosley in his resume, but really who cares? Under the circumstances, he was beating a much older and way past-prime Mosley. So if a similar thing happens vs. GGG, IMO Canelo will still not be worth being considered a top-10 P4P contender. He has to defeat GGG in 2017 at the latest, provided that GGG gets past Jacobs in the 1st place (and Canelo himself gets past a skeleton of Chavez Jr. as well).
