Tito was a very good fighter. The world "great" could even be used, I suppose...though I can't yet. However, he was far too limited a technician to be considered the Greatest Ever at 147. I'm not even sure I'd put him in the Top 10 of all time....15 maybe.

I'm not dismissing Tito. He's a very good fighter; but a fighter is not just judged on wins and losses; but to whom those losses were to and how he looked in his wins and who his opponents were.

The fact the De La Hoya (for 9 rounds), Bernard Hopkins, & Winky Wright were dominating Tito without him showing any plan b or diversity hurts him when in comparison to great fighters, like Robinson, Leonard, Basilio, Gavilan, Armstrong, and others who were tested and overcame.

Having a good record isn't enough.

          pernell whitaker

seriously whoever mentioned tito as the best welterweight ever is out of his mind: tito cant deal with a fighter boxing behind a good jab. The people of his same size mentioned above would all school him, bad.
I agree with some of your points but highly disagree with the ODLH one. Yes, I dont think DLH could ever lick the floor with Tito otherwise he would've done it. What are you mostly basing this on, Tito's losses to Middleweights? ODLH just like Tito went over his head when he went up to middleweight.

I think DLH's boxing gives Tito problems but Tito is a good counter-puncher also and I would wager Tito wins if they actually pull of the rematch.

I do believe that a prime Pernell would UD Tito though but I also think that a prime Pernell would UD DLH also along with 99% of the welter weights, Pernell is one of my favorite boxers and lived up to his nickname of Sweet.

BTW Tito's competition is on par with DLH's competition. DLH has controversial loss to Tito when his style of backing up and boxing was considered to passive. But you forget that this criteria of judging also gave DLH the decision over Pernell when I actually thought Pernell out boxed him and was the winner. DLH fan's can't complain because he has had his share of controversial decisions i.e. Pernell and Quartay. Every good fighter is gonna have those in his career at some point, not everyone can be totally dominating every fight when facing top fighers.

Ray Robinson by far the best welterweight ever... It's easy to say someone like Tito or DLH because that's who we grew up watching, but the title of "Best Welterweight" ever definately belongs to Sugar Ray Robinson.

Margarito is the best welter ever...no other welter has been feared more than him..dlh,trinidad leanord etc...people fought them to see where they stood but when it comes to margarito...people make a list of excuses not to fight him because actually fighting him means getting destroyed...

Are you being serious or are you just trying to antagonize people? Its even funnier than that guy who said SRR was overated and had Zab as the #1 Welter.

Oh contrair. De La Hoya does count because it was a very controversial decision. Oscar lost that fight because he went into defensive mode. Tito was aggressive; but wasn't effective until Oscar quit attacking.

Hopkins outboxed and outmuscled Tito. Besides Vargas, Tito was never in a life and death struggle and when challenged by a superior boxer, he didn't have the answers. He never showed the ability to think in the ring. He had a game plan that worked against 90% of the guys he got in the ring with; but didn't have a back-up plan when things didn't go according to plan.

                      Top fighters Tito faced:

                      Whitaker....old and shopworn

                      De La Hoya...controversial decision

Camacho....wasn't a great fighter since facing Rosario; and was fighting above his best weight

                      Hopkins.....kayoed by

                      Wright......schooled completely

See? Tito beat a bunch of good fighters like Blocker, Campas, Carr, Camacho, & Vargas; but never really excelled against the upper tier. That's my reasoning for keeping him out of the top 10.
