I could see Calzaghe doing a bit better than Reggie Johnson did and pulling out a points win.Im not saying I couldn't see Toney winning either. Why Toney, who didn't destroy McCallum, lost to Griffin twice and usually went into the later rounds even in his best wins has turned into Mike Tyson in this thread is beyond me.

it's because calzaghe isnt a stick and move kind of guy. he has a high workrate with wide, loopy punches. most of his combos are right-left-right-left-right-left-etc. he doesnt usually fight on the outside so i don't see him totally changing his style for toney. he just leaves himself way too open to not get countered.

that's why toney is tyson in this thread. i actually think fat heavyweight toney vs prime tyson is a more meaningful fight to discuss.

and it doesnt help that calzaghe got dipped by 40-something bernard and shot roy jones.

          That's completely false.

Gotta love the low IQ action
Joe had been in wars by the time they fought.

A KO is a ko but it's the wars that destroy the body. A fighter is far better off being stopped early than taking 12 rounds of punishment. Boxing iq.

Joe was worn out RJJ was fresher and Joe still punked him.

Notwithstanding the crazy Calzaghe fans, i do believe Joe would be a very difficult matchup for Toney.

One has to remember that James wasn't that huge a puncher at SMW as he was at MW so i don't believe that Toney could simply counter Calzaghe and knock-him-out. Also, Toney always had trouble with pressure and speed and his counters could get sloppy or get smothered by pressure, he was also very INACTIVE sometimes and against a guy who throws so many punches like Calzaghe that would be trouble.

I think Calzaghe wins by split decision.

Nobody gets as sloppy as Pal Joey.

                  Joe has NOTHING for Toney.

He was terrified of Glenn Johnson....a guy Sven Ottke beat

Calzhage had his hands full with a shot to hell Charles Brewer.

Because James Toney has developed this ridiculous legend based on "potential, if he ever really got into shape" that is not remotely in line with the reality of his career. It's not even good fighters like Griffin or McCallum, the guy got whooped by crap fighters when Toney was supposed to be at his best.

Fat heavyweight Toney would get killed within 3 by Tyson. WTF. In no way at all is that a fight worth discussing compared to Calzaghe vs. Toney.
