What choice do they have? They must give Oquendo a title shot.

Make him the WBA Mando for the AJ-Klitchko winner, and recognize the title they already have out there, instead of continuing this garbage regular trinket.

The problem is, either one of Oquendo or Briggs is going to end up with this trinket anyway, and the WBA will be in the same position as before. Even if they plan on ordering the WBA regular champion fight the super champion, they're just adding layers and pushing a resolution further back.

They are legally obligated to put Oquendo forward for a title shot anyway, why keep the second title alive? It's pointless.

They've created such a mess for themselves, and they're still screwing it up.

Depends if you're willing to class a "regular" WBA title holder as a champ. I don't. The real WBA title will be on the line in the Joshua-Klitschko fight.

the WBA world heavyweight championship is the oldest of the recognized heavyweight titles. there's no such thing as a "regular" championship. the WBA has a world championship and a super championship. when the titles are unified, it's the super championship that is being eliminated, not the world championship.

so as silly as it seems, briggs does have a chance here to finally win the belt held by ali, etc.

but they don't have a title out there. the interim, world and super titles were all vacated recently.

they don't have a choice. there was a legal settlement promising lucas browne a title shot. briggs accepted the fight. then lucas failed another drug test. you can't take briggs' title shot away now without creating another legal mess. so you kill two birds with one stone by having briggs fight oquendo.

but ustinov is still owed a shot because ortiz vacated rather than face his mandatory. so the briggs/oquendo winner will be responsible for facing ustinov while the wlad/AJ winner has to face ortiz.

it's a giant mess, but it'll be cleared up soon and as long as the WBA doesn't go crown an interim champion, i can't criticize them for how this is being handled considering they had so many legal headaches they needed to carefully handle without creating more legal headaches.

because they were legally obligated to browne and once briggs was promised a shot, they became legally obligated to him. if browne had failed a test BEFORE briggs was promised a shot, then the WBA could have done what you're suggesting.

No he doesn't because they already announced the super championship fight. When there's a super championship the WBA "regular" is basically a mandatory title not a real world champion.

As far as I'm aware, the legal requirement for giving Browne a title shot, and making a title fight for Browne-Briggs accordingly, doesn't immediately create a legal requirement to give Briggs a follow up shot. Besides being hard done by, I don't believe Briggs has any legal standing to force a title shot. Heck, in this litigious society, I feel like Briggs would have a better chance of suing Browne for loss of earnings. Although, if I'm off base with this, fair play.

And as I understand, the "Super" championship is what is on the line in the AJ-Klitchko fight, therefore a mandatory for this can be ordered pretty much immediately - Oquendo.

Ustinov and Ortiz create further layers, but one would think they can be ordered to fight in an eliminator - I don't know if either of them have legal standing to force a title shot either.

Besides all that, you nailed it when you said it is one giant mess. For the WBA to be in this situation, is a reflection of absolute gross incompetence. They simply should not be allowed to operate a business.
