Why do people underrate Golovkin's defense?

People underrate his defense because they don't know what they are watching. It's honestly that simple.

Guy who don't know too much about the sport tend to relate good defense with philly shell type styles, which is pretty erroneous.

Golovkin has fantastic defense. Golovkin is similar to Maidana in that because he comes forward and is an aggressive fighter who can stop you with one shot, that you can't also be an elusive, slick fighter who knows who to roll shots, catch and shoot, and parry while throwing.


Then, there's the fact that fighters largely choose how they want to fight. Guys who don't understand boxing don't see that. Just like a basketball player can choose to be aggressive and drive to the rim or defer and move the ball and set up post up shooters, so can a fighter choose to fight off the backfoot, choose to go to war but maintain defensive integrity, choose to go to war and disregard defense, etc.

Because no one has seen GGG's defense because he has not been in with a serious threat. All we have really seen is GGG's offense. Truthfully no one can really critique his D because he has not been forced to show that side of his game. I think most folks are hoping the Jacobs fight ends up being a competitive bout that will bring out the best in both fighters and force both of them to dig deep for the victory.

He showed good defense against Lemieux and has previously, but you don't get to throw caution to the wind as he has in recent times and retain respect as a defensive fighter.

Ya'll make it seem like lil Davey is the 2nd coming of Marvin Hagler.

If you're basing his defense off Lemieux..then you're not using a very good example.

GGG actually has a very good shoulder roll. He did it in the stevens fight and against lemieux. He also uses less energy when he does it.

His defense is sound. That's about it tho. He's no defensive guru and he dies get sloppy. I'm not sure what people want people to see in his defense. That's not his specialty. There are numerous active fighters out there with better defense. Let him stick to what makes him deadly.

So, if he shuts Jacobs down completely and GGG emerges unscathed, what will you say then? If he shows up with a great defense, then either his defense improved or Jacobs wasn't that good to begin with. Which will it be?

He's developed fatal flaws in his game and he can't help it.

Maybe it's all the weak comp...all the years of fighting guys that he KNOWS can't hurt him.

None of that will happen any way.

Golovkin is not that kind of fighter.

GGG couldn't even emerge unscathed against Adama and Wade.

Gabe Rosado couldn't lay a glove on Angulo....but had GG busted up pretty good.

The guy knocks out 90% of the people he faces. If he hits you flush with that left hook, you are going to the canvas. He might not be the best all around boxer but his left is VERY fast and strong as schit, no observant boxing fan can take that away from him.
