Comments Thread For: Cotto: Kirkland is The Best Name Out There For Me To Fight

James Kirkland's last fight resulted in Canelo Alvarez brutally knocking out the heavy-handed junior middleweight. The veteran from Austin, Texas, hasn't fought since Alvarez knocked him out in the third round of their May 2015 fight at Minute Maid Park in Houston. Those are the primary reasons why everyone wants to know why Cotto, coming off his own loss to Alvarez nearly 13 months ago in Las Vegas, decided to fight Kirkland on February 25 in Frisco, Texas.

I disagree with the idea that Kirkland is the best name out there... Before people start yelling GGG, you must acknowledge that Cotto is much smaller than GGG (even if he held the lineal MW title for a couple of fights). GGG isn't a reasonable option. He could have fought Brook, Bradley, Lara, either Charlo, and they would have had the same level of name at least and been better opposition. Cotto picked this fight to showcase that he still has it to make a better fight. It may backfire though. Ann Wolfe is the biggest x factor in this fight.

It should've been Bradley especially with a CW of 153. How do you go from Marquez to Kirkland?

Kirkland fought twice in the last three years and got knocked out in his last fight over a year and a half ago.

Yeah, definitely the best name out there. For Cotto.

He means best name in terms of financial reward vs risk. He's not wrong.

Except he knows Bradley, Brook, Charlo etc would likely box his ears off to yet another humiliating defeat ala Canelo, Trout. So he picks an ok but not great boxer, whom he thinks he can avoid direct punches from. It's a minor gamble, but really, this fight is all about the cash grab and nothing more. It serves nothing in furthering legacy status.

May not be the best of opponents, but it sure is a very dangerous fight for Cotto.

Pressure, power and AW in his corner.
