The thing is, Roc Nation probably made a loss on the first fight. Kovalev's $2m fee is actually more proportional to the revenue that the fight drew

SMH, Jay-Z just lost $5M dollars. Great for Son of Fraud but definitely not good for his financier and promoter. Dude is about to burn another bridge because of his pride and greed.

If you add up Kovalev's purses it's a higher total than if you add up Stevenson's

Stevenson would be richer if he'd stayed on HBO and taken bigger fights (assuming he didn't get KTFO by Kovalev, which is really the crux of the matter here)

A man is known by whether or not he keeps his word. Ward has a reputation as a deal breaker, contract breaker, word breaker. It doesn't matter how many times he invokes Jesus or what he thinks he's earned. You keep your word or you're just a scumbag. Do the rematch or be a scumbag.

Ward is out of his mind if he thinks he deserves more money for the rematch, that $5 million ultimately wasn't justified so this can not be an excuse to hold up negotiations WHEN THEY BEGIN.

The only problem here is that Roc Nation and specially Jay Z dont know **** about boxing and they thought: Andre Ward - The Olympic Gold Medalist, he will be our money maker, a huge star, a fight with Kovalev will generate the most PPV of the year, at least 400-500k, as seen here: http://www.badlefthook.com/2016/11/9...r-kovalev-ward

They signed Ward and paid him a contracted minimum per fight, and for the Kovalev fight it was $5 Million. Now the fight barely generated $4-5 Million altogether, meaning if both fighters got $1.5-2 Mill it would have been a fair split, thats the money the fighters are worth and they generate from gate, sponsors and PPV buys. Thats what Kovalev got, the money he is worth, a fair split.

Roc Nation is totally new in the boxingscene and learned it the hard way, they lost millions on Ward, they will be losing a ton of money on Cotto and they are also losing money on Rigo.

Jay Z probably realized that by now and said, oh Dre is not the star i thought he was, he has a terrible attitude, nobody really likes him but a certain demographic and they dont seem to buy tickets or buy PPVs. Dre stole my money, but thats enough now. Next fight you only get the cash you actually bring in.

And now Dre, knowing he already got a gift in the first match, knowing he would probably lose the rematch, rather retires with the couple millions he stole.

TBH sure Ward was overpaid but I think that RN thought that the PPV would do numbers.. somewhere around the 300k range so they where willing to risk the 5 mil.

Now that the dust has settled and the results are in. RN/JayZ would be foolish to give Ward another 5 mil

Dude is a great fighter but he's just is not a draw. People comparing him to Floyd he's not even close to Floyd's level. by 30 Floyd was a bonafide superstar Ward is 32-33 years old and not even breaking 200k buys with a good opp and his career is not on the upside...in fact he is the age most fighters start retiring....

She already discussed it in the article. Roc Nation paid Ward out of pocket. Otherwise he'd probably be getting the same amount as Kovalev, which is $2M.

The rematch will likely contain the same figures. She also discussed that what he gets paid isn't her problem, that's up to his promoter. So if he wants more, Roc Nation is going to have to pony up.

The fight definitely generated way more than 4-5 million If you actually do the math but I get your points...and even though it did much more than 5 million they still gave Ward most of the money the fight grossed. Nobody made more money than Ward in that fight, but I don't see it happening like that again..

Ward is ready for a financial break out but will not do so getting low paychecks. and before anyone mentions Oakland, Las Vegas is not so much different!
Except he was greatly overpaid for his first fight with Kovalev. Keith Idec has detailed it in articles and on twitter that there was a total loss especially on Roc Nation's part.

That's no one's fault except Roc Nation's because they decided to pay him out of pocket for a fight that didn't generate all that much.
