There shouldn't even be such thing as a "tuneup" in the era of fighters fighting only twice or three times a year unless they are moving weight classes (except RJJ faced Tony his first fight at 168 and many others have too, they're only half divisions now so fighters shouldn't need to "acclimate" 8 pounds when they're already draining down).
I mean Lara already had an easy fight last time. Why does a fighter who can't sell tickets get two tuneups in a row? Andrade already ****ing called him out. Andrade wants to fight him. That should have been the fight in January.
That's why the hate for PBC. Because fighters like Lara are getting two tuneups in a row on TV channels that we pay for. We are the paying customers. We pay because he want to see competitive, relevant fights. If the fight is not competitive or relevant, put it off TV, and give the TV date to fighters who are willing to take competitive, relative opponents.
That's how I see it right now. Maybe if PBC had built up more good will, and Lara had just beaten Andrade and Charlo back to back, I would say "Lara just delivered, he can get a nice easy tuneup payday on one of these TV shows this time." But since it's just tuneup after tuneup (Adonis Stevenson anyone?) there is no good will built up and people rightfully complain.
i would just about bet my life you bought GGG/Brook

So for example, Charlo-Williams just happened. That was the first legitimate fight either have ever been in at the top level, so it was exciting, but also just a first taste. Now that we've seen a great performance by Charlo, we actually have proof for the first time to know to feel excited next time, and to know this guy is actually relevant to the elite in boxing. So now if Charlo-Andrade can happen just 4 months later since Charlo took no punishment, now we know in our minds, man, whoever wins this, it actually could mean they're the a pound-for-pound guy. This fight is really important. And so the excitement grows. Charlo-Williams was like two talented young guys, but how elite really? Charlo-Andrade is "Charlo could actually be elite." Then if he beats Andrade, he's really great, so the even more exciting question develops only a result of this momentum... could he be the best?
4 months later, Charlo-GGG, right during the momentum streak. Now this fight is super exciting because if Charlo wins, he is actually going to be a Hall of Fame, elite type guy. Then if he beats GGG, you finally get a tuneup in, but then 8 months after GGG, Canelo, then if he wins, the champs at 168.
We want to see how far the elite can go. We want to see mega fights strung together, one topping the next, like Pacquiao moving from one crazy matchup and performance to the next. That is excitement. That is drama. We want to see rematches and trilogies not between good, not elite guys, like Frampton-Santa Cruz, but between the best guys, with P4P relevance. Kovalev-Ward should be a trilogy. Charlo-Williams can have a rematch any time and maybe a trilogy. Then they can have another trilogy with Andrade. Really build the drama, the storylines, the back and forth.
That is what creates excitement, momentum, and stars, and builds the sport. Not one intriguing matchup between two talented guys who neither has ever fought another elite guy, then one guy wins and says "I proved all the doubters wrong and proved everything and I'm the best now!" Nah man people doubted you for one fight and you won one fight. That's one fight. Now go make the trilogy, and another trilogy, and GGG, and do it all in a row, and then you have drama, then you have something special, then you have a superstar.
But one good matchup every 2 years? Or the attitude that you're above even being asked to fight a top guy, and that the fans are doubting you just because they want you to fight a top guy and you don't feel you should, and then that when you beat that guy, that means you've accomplished everything and you should not have to fight top guys anymore? Nah man that does not help the sport of boxing. It is a diva attitude. That's the best way to say it. So many PBC fighters have been treated as, and have acted like, divas, and divas is not good for any sport bro. You know this.

PBC ....Protecting Boxing Cowards will continue with their ways......once in a while they will give you a scoop of chicken salad but it is always chickenpoop .....those fighters have a reputation for holding hands a singing Kumbaya....the PBC brand has a bad reputation.....hope it is true that they will change their ways but I doubt it

Originally posted by Dr.Cool View PostAs long as all the fights are on Showtime, then it is the same old, same old. PBC was supposed to bring boxing back from the "other" bin of sports websites. Refusing to try and make new fans is not what PBC was billed as. Charlo-Williams was a Showtime fight. You can call it PBC or anything else but when it is on a premium channel, it is not reaching new fans. Fights like Charlo-Williams, Frampton-Santa Cruz 2 are the fights everyone wanted to see on PBC. Show blatant mismatches to people who don't follow boxing and then only put the good fights on where the die-hards see it.
154 is stacked with talent. But two of them are twin brothers who will never fight each other and one of them shares a trainer with Lara so that fight will never happen, Andrade apparently has forgotten how to sign his name. I get ducking Jermell Charlo, but ducking Culcay?!? Are you serious? Andrade was good years ago, but it is ancient history since he was in a decent fight.
No one is going to fight Spence. He would end Brook's career. Charlo-Williams was a top notch match up and so is Thurman-Porter. But two good fights a year isn't going to cut it.
Maybe Al was waiting so Schaefer can get his cut of the pie. After all, a lot of fighters signed with Haymon wouldn't be if not for Schaefer. I hope so. I was really pumped when PBC started. But over two years later I can still count the number of good fights on one hand.
